Q: My parents are building a house that will have high ceilings in the living room (2 stories high) and a bedroom over the adjacent dining room. Therefore, when you walk in you'll see a high blank wall with the entrance to the dining room underneath. Is it enough to hang a large painting on the wall? I believe this wall is going to be 15 feet wide. Any suggestions?

White Enamel Flatwa...
go to whatisblik.com and get a big wall decal
I think the sample photo is gorgeous. A single stunning, oversized canvas is just plenty.
buy a huge canvas print from me!

I'm gonna do the same with one of my New York B&W images.
leave it blank. Less is more.
Hire a local, unknown street artist to come in a ad a contemporary vibe to the place by allowing them to go wild on the white wall.
I think that the large painting looks nice with the clean lines of the space. Antonio Ballatore from HGTV designed a large wall mural for a space similar to yours in one of his episodes. This would be a good way to add some color to the space.

Hang a rug:
5x8 or 8x10
I'm doing this now for a client that has 15 ft. high ceiling.
What about hanging some kind of oversized statement lighting in front of that wall?

Or something sculptural on the wall?
Or a big vintage sign sign? Not saying it should be this "Cheese" one at all.

Or a Calderesque mobile?
Hi AT,
I wrote in with this question. For the record, the house isn't a contemporary house - think more "stucco-sided McMansion"
A rug or tapestry sounds like a good idea. There's also a 10 foot wide Chinese scroll painting that my mom purchased a few years back.
Hang an interesting wall covering or mural. Check out troveline.com
This firm did it in one of their projects: junestreetarchitecture.com
(I really wish I could just insert the picture right now)

The heads of the "Hang All Art At Eye Level" people must be spinning right now!
Art is fine, but you can also work with light... use spotlights to create interesting shadows.
My apartment had a large white wall that I squared off with painter's tape, bought 11 different testers of paint and went to town. Pics of the process and finished process are below.

@r0ss Nicely done.
My suggestions were more contemporary but I think any of the same basic ideas could be applied in a style that's in line with your parents' aesthetic. Since you have a large scroll on hand and your mother puchased it—so I assume she likes it—try putting it up on that wall and see how it looks.
