It's a cliche at this point: the dryer ate one of your socks and now the singleton loiters around your laundry room. Although you've given up the hope that its mate with turn up, it kills you to throw it away. Here are a few ways to put leftover socks to good use around the house, from toys to cleaning supplies.

Shaw's Original Fir...
I love these ideas! How fun! I have tons of missing socks so this is perfect!

I love any idea that helps reduce waste while being fully adorable. It's truly a win/win.
This is insane! I was just sorting through the socks last night and thinking "I should check what to do with 'leftover' socks" and lo and behold an appropriate AT post! thank you :)
Something you can also do with a clean, preferably unused sock, is to fill it up with uncooked rice grains [ not too full, enough so it is flexible say around your neck etc] and sew it up on the open end. you can then use this as a reusable heat pack. put it in the microwave for a minute or two and it will retain the heat for quite a while. You can refill it with fresh rice whenever you feel the microwave has nuked it too much :-)
I have never lose socks. I don't know why, I don't do anything special except that I spin the tub in both the (front load) washer and the dryer before abandoning them, in case something sticks where I don't see it. And I check the floor around my laundry bastket and the floor of the laundry room.
Just as well, my socks (all black knee-highs for wearing with my black shoes under slacks) would make for depressing crafts! ;^)
Great idea but my socks are never this pretty. =(
Yes to the rice socks! I've only tried cotton socks, so I'll try my others. Wonderful for sore necks, cramps.
Your top loading washer is what ate your socks... take out the tub you will find them there. If you have kids never mind they are at school or well don't think about it too much just make cute crafts instead.
Baby socks are even worse for disappearing! Not sure what to do with such tiny socks. Egg cosies maybe...
Those sock fish look perfect for baby socks, which like mitenska says are the worst offenders!
Love this, thank you. Made me giggle and gave me some good uses for all those mismatched socks whose partner has gone missing or developed a hole.
I don't like feet, so while I think these ideas are great, I could never use socks that have been worn for most of the ideas listed above.
When I have a sock's mate go missing and it doesn't turn up after a while (or socks that are starting to be too worn) I use them for cleaning rags. I make a slit in the heel so that I can distinguish it from "good" socks, especially in the case of white sport socks.
Also, purposefully wearing mismatched socks can make for an interesting day!
Some of these also answer the question: what to do when the foot part wears out (which it will, first) and the top part (the cuff?) is still good? I like #s 2, 5 and 6 because they only use the 'cuff'.
@ JNR: a hook & loop rug is another great option....only your feelt will touch that anyway right? (um, unless you like to sit on the floor like me;)
*feet* i mean
The sock hair BUN!
I never lost a sock. Until I had a baby. Now he has a spot in his drawer with partnerless socks, all bright. We also have socks that he's outgrown in three month increments. Can't wait to try these.
Hi FG - I love those reusable heat pillows too. If they don't warm up so much any more, the rice (wheat, barley, cherry pits...) are too dried out from reheating. Just put a cup of water in the microwave with the heat pillow and the water steam will "power it up" again (without making it damp).
dog chew toys are also a hit with solo socks- our pups know that only socks tied ini knots are fair game
What's wrong with wearing mismatched socks? I do all the time. I only buy white & black pairs of socks. I just dump them in my drawer. I don't bother to match them up first & fold together. In the morning I pull out 2 of the same color & put them on. Saves time, energy, & sanity. Who has time for matching & folding socks! (and yeah, there have been days I've worn one black sock & one white sock! I save old pillow cases & put worn out & torn socks in it. When there's enough in there for a good amount of stuffing (& I also put in old worn out dish towels, T-shirts, etc) I sew the end of the pillow case up & Voila! Doggie bed pillow!
