Q: I've got this problem with my studio decor... it's all solids!! I went out on a limb to buy a printed throw pillow for the sofa (LOVE it) and now I want to incorporate a pattern and add some color. Any suggestions for curtains that will best suit my windows? There are three in the apartment, all the same size as pictured. I'm pattern-blind, please help!

Nomade Express Slee...
If you're unsure about pattern. Why not try starting with some textures in complementing or contrasting colours to your white and blue scheme?
Can you hang something in a really bold pattern behind your white curtains? That would be really cool, you can adjust how much pattern is on show depending on your mood :)
*pressed send before I could edit, re-read the post and you mentioned you already are sold on wanting to include more patterns, but I still think that including textures as well as pattern would benefit your apartment too! hope that helps, i'm sure other posters will give loads of good advice soon...
I think a graphic black and white would be really nice...maybe a chevron pattern? Or you could keep the curtains the way they are and add the ikea stockholm Rand rug. http://www.ikea.com/us/en/catalog/products/90103254
Ikea has great patterned duvet covers for great prices, and also has amazing patterned fabric that you can make curtains with. (curtains, too!)
www.younghouselove.com has a great tutorial about making no-sew curtains. A nice area rug or two would help as well. Back to Ikea! And yes, you can put an area rug on your carpeting. Looks really great. You have a great start there. All best!
I'd add a horizontal stripe or a chevron in one of the colors in the pillow. I think a bright yellow would be nice. I have a hard time with pattern as well, and while I'm fine with having a single pattern in a room, the whole mixing boggles my mind. I'm working on it, though...
You have a great start with what you have done already. I would suggest using orange for a pop of color through accessories, i.e., pillow(s), vase(s), bowl(s), artwork, bedding.
I think you're doing perfectly well as you are. The patterns can come from accessories, just as you have already done with the throw pillow.
You have the solids down solidly and beautifully, and patterns tend to be trend-based. This is why I would continue as you are doing and bring in small patterned elements in accessories that are not as costly and which you'd be willing to part with in a few years.
You obviously have a terrific sense of design and a great sensibility: how do you feel about beginning to invest in art? Art pieces need not be costly and, if you buy what you love, you will have patterned objects forever.
I think some colorful art on the wall would help, a few more colorful pillows, an interesting coffee table with a creative rug would do wonders for this place.
Your studio is adorable! I love the idea of a very large scale black and white pattern. Something really bold and graphic with alot of texture. Brown and white might be nice too. I would get wall to wall curtains so that when the curtains are partially closed it gives the illusion that the window is much larger than it actually is. A colorful area rug is a great idea as well. You could go with a solid, a color blocking pattern, or even a smaller pattern than whatever you pick for your curtains. That would create a nice contrast. In your bedroom area, it might be nice if you could connect the two sets of curtains and do something that goes all the way across. Very cute place!
I'm with the rug group. A flat weave cotton area rug , like Madeline Weinrib at ABC Carpet would introduce patten to this room and break up the expanse of beige wall to wall.
I would do patterned curtains in that blue wall color and maybe some other color - red (to match your poster), yellow, blue, brown - whatever your style is. I would also add some patterned sheets, throw pillow, sham, quilt, whatever to your bed in similar colors as the curtains (or completely different!)
I agree - maybe you could also add some patterned rugs in front of the tv and under the bed. You have a good canvas to start - you just need to fill it in!
Another idea is to have wall to wall floor to ceiling drapes on the wall behind the tv. It will create an illusion of large windows and add texture and interest to the room.
There are some fabulous printed curtains and duvets on the urban outfitters website. I bought a pair of curtain/sheers in a pattern called Garden Bird which might be quite lovely in your studio!
You know what? You've already started, keep going. In the living area the pillow and the print on the wall are a great start. The print brings in a pop of orange which would be a great accent color. Keep going in that direction.
How to mix pattern? You can have one of each in a room, a plaid, a polka dot, a floral, a stripe(stripes are good and I think perfect for this apartment), a paisley etc. When you mix just don't go all small patterns unless you want your space to look like a quilt. You've gone with all solids so far so can swap out or add some of the above.
If it were me, an abstract piece over the sofa, probably horizontal and a few pieces of pottery on the end table. Patterns of choice would be stripes, abstract and fun florals.
This is as simple as PBS! Plain, Big, and Small or Stripe. I used to work in men's tailored clothing and this was a trick I used with helping men mix and match their wardrobe. You always need a PLAIN. That would be your walls. (by the way, could you get your blue paint out and wrap around that corner towards the kitchen. Express the volume and not the plane)
In this scenario your pillow, in proportion to your room, is your SMALL pattern and now you just need a BIG. It could be a wide cabana stripe, a series of circles, but something larger and graphic would be great.
And don't forget about texture either. Everything is sooooooo smooth in your place. Rough it up with a really heavliy textured, woven pillow, a throw...something with some depth.
I use PBS with my clients now and in my own home to get started. What's Plain? What's my BIG going to be? It doesn't really matter whether it's floral or geometric or abstract or plaid but the scale has to be large. Then I look for a small pattern (again this could be a plaind, a floral or something else) and if I can't find that you can always default to a classic stripe....they work anywhere.
PBS!
Stripes!
You have a blank canvas! I'd put it anywhere you like. Curtains, pillows throws, etc. At this point I don't think you could mess it up.
I'm a textile stylist and I tell people this all the time...when working with patterns, its best to choose fabrics/textures that are not too similar in size and scale, and have some type of color that ties everything in. You've done a great job with your pillow! Now choose patterns that are smaller or larger than this one. Also, stripes, plaids and geometric prints work well with florals when the scale is proportional.
These!!

I love your space! Maybe try adding a curtain with a subtle pattern or texture, not super bold or colourful, maybe something like this:

or

Take a look at the Meridian grommet top curtains from Echo Home at Bed Bath & Beyond. Great in the black and white for a graphic punch, or maybe go for a softer look with the linen.
Get a great colorful piece of art for over your bed -- or a cool headboard in a patterned fabric.
There area bunch of interesting choices here:

or just go to a fabric store and buy what catches your eye. You can easily dop make shift curtains with iron on seam binding tape... and that can be a really inexpensive answer.
As usual, I think tyou need to find a picture of a room that you love and use that to giude you to a patter.
Your style looks crisp and modern and a little retro to me, so you might want to do geometrics. Bringing in a greek key pattern will make it a little fancier -- Kelly Wearstler does those a lot. If you want it to be a little more romantic, check out lesindiennes.com for inspiration. If you want it young and crisp, try bright stripes -- I'd do them horizontally.
I just did an online room makeover with black & white striped curtains that would look great in your space too. If you're new to pattern, start with a variety of patterned pillows with coordinating colors for your room (teal, red, lime green. Etsy is a great source for pillow covers.

since you like it so much, you should draw your curtain and rug colors from the printed pillow. post a link to it if you can so we can see it better. looks like gray, teal, purple, white and acid green.

Slowly ease into patterns with cheaper things - like bedding, small accent pieces, maybe even a set of cheaper curtains to exchange the ones over your closet....let that help you pick what you love before you sink a lot of money into something.
My first thought is to have a vintage kimono hanging against the wall - adding colour and pattern, and softening the hard lines. It would hang rather nicely from the bulkhead next to the TV.
Otherwise plunge into the etsy pool and find something that speaks to you.
Since you have the blue and neutral theme going, I would suggest using patterned textiles as an opportunity to introduce a third color to your overall palette.
I've seen purples and greens work really well with that blue tone. Some black accents would be a nice contrast as well.
Example of blue and purple: http://www.apartmenttherapy.com/la/house-tours/matthew-maus-creative-loft-in-the-chapman-buildinghouse-tour-114390
Aside from textiles, you can add a lot of pattern and texture by creating small collections and vignettes. Gorgeous pottery, for instance, is actually dirt cheap on ebay.
i also think you should be looking at urban outfitters curtains, rugs and bedding. the links are too long or i'd have posted them earlier. your poster is uo, so you could pull from the gray and red and modern theme. or stick with the other colours in the pillow.
if not for the pillow: i would go with the kimono print rug from world market and the chloe gauze curtains in purple (not lavendar) from uo.
also, you don't have to use the same curtains on both sides of the room. you can use different patterns with the same colors or the same curtain in different colors.
