Whether you're set up in a dedicated home theater or keep a small TV in your living room, a media room needs two things: Something to watch and a screen to watch it on. But after you bought the TV and the DVD player or the projector and the Blu Ray, what's next? For us, our first media room extra was surround sound.

Yep, our first extra was a surround sound system. It happened by accident—but we couldn't be happier.

My boyfriend received our Magnavox surround sound system from his sister as a gift, admitting he probably wouldn't have ever bought it for himself. But now that we've got it, we can't imagine not having it.

Surround sound transforms everything, from an HD movie to an episode of Lost, into a serious experience. If we had to do it again, we'd probably make surround sound our first "extra" purchase in another media room.

So what about you, readers? What was your first not-necessary buy for your media room? Tell us in the comments!
