Here are a few of our favorite ways of putting the dead space to work....
• loveseat or set of arm chairs for a cozy reading spot
• dog bed
• writing desk
• dresser
• storage trunk
• pair of ottomans
• bench
• table and chairs
• vanity table
How do you use your extra space?

Commercial Flour Sa...
We used to have space for a bench so our dog could easily get up on the bed, but now we have to pick her up. Much smaller bedroom.
what's at the end of my bed? a dog.
A dog bed is what is at the end of my bed...and there's barely enough room for that.
a cedar chest that holds all of my bedding, topped with a cushion embroidered by my husband's grandmother, all of this hidden, most of the time, by the pile of clothes that always ends up there no matter what.
Laundry baskets full of clothing dog. :)
Nothing. Just the way we like it.
I have an old wooden index card cabinet. It's only about a foot high so it's good for sitting on to tie my shoes. It also finishes the bed nicely, so that you can't see the crap and dustbunnies under it from the door.
I keep junk in it - old chess pieces, photo frames, ornaments currently out of favour.
I sleep on a full-size mattress in a queen-size loft area over the cab of my motorhome. The extra space (a little over a foot wide and several feet across) is used to store my suitcases and the laundry basket. The suitcases double as a headboard for leaning against when I want to read in bed.
Our dog, on his small area rug.
My feet, usually.
A small gap for me to be able to walk arund to the other side, and then my dresser.
A storage chest that we keep extra sheets, blankets, etc in. I recently rearranged all the furniture in our apartment and this was the first time since we bought the chest that I could actually put it at the foot of the bed where I've always wanted it.
Man, I wish I had two Wegner three-legged chairs at the end of my bed.
Right now though, nothing.
oops, sorry about the formatting error.
A trunk with bedding and off-season clothing is at the foot of our bed. It has small wheels on one end and gets moved around the apt. for extra seating, a step stool, extra coffee table etc.
no room at the end of our bed, the door swings open close enough to the bed as it is. i love the look of a simple bench at the end of the bed, it would help to hold my blankets on that keep sliding!
My laundry hamper... how romantic!
a pile of my husband's cr@p.... it annoys the living daylights out of me as it's always the very first thing i see when i walk into the bedroom!
The dogs bed is at the foot of my bed.
I wanted to buy a tufted cream-coloured bench because it would look pretty, but I know that my husband and I would just end up tossing clothing and random crap on it making it a messy catch-all.
So there's nothing at the end of our bed. Except for clothes on the floor. See what I mean? lol
A dresser, which faces... another dresser! It's a festival of dressers. The one touching the bed is usually covered in laundry, and if not laundry, then cats. (The cats are actually on the bed if laundry prevents them from occupying the dresser).
The large Expedit bookshelf which separate my sleeping aclove from my living space. It functions as a nice "guest" night stand as well. I'm coveting all of those chandeliers in the pics, want.
right now nothing, but hopefully in a few days we will have a storage trunk that we are currently using as coffee table as we upgrade to a new coffee table.
Nothing since it would keep me from accessing my dresser. In the future when I can have a bigger room, I'll probably place either a trunk or storage bench at the end to store linens.
Um... unfolded clean laundry, a hamper, and a cat.
"A small gap for me to be able to walk arund to the other side"
Same with me.
I used to have a small stool at the base of my bed for the express purpose of helping my older kitty get up onto the bed, which in turn was a step to where we kept her own kitty bed on a nearby bureau. It was a small room...
We love a storage trunk or storage ottoman at the end of the bed. Looks nice and makes for a great place to keep linens or even to use as a hamper.
There's a gap between the foot of my bed and the vintage Broyhill Brasilia dresser that's on the opposite wall - and on the wall above is a gallery collection of paintings in gilded frames and B&W photographs of boats and ships for me to gaze upon...
I wanted a bench for the end of my bed. I found this small wrought iron bench on craigslist with the figure of a man bent over. I love the bench besides it being shorter than I would have liked. I bought it so I could put on my shoes in the morning. Instead it has ended up with clothes on it most days. I put my hamper in the bedroom closet, and I have a linen closet so no need for either to be at the end of the bed.
We have a long, low bookcase with a bench top.
I have a low Chinese altar table with drawers at the foot of my bed that I keep jewelry in. It's proportionately too small for the size of my bed, so I'm looking for maybe an upholstered bench.
I just purchased a tufted storage bench from Sears.com for $99...but there's a gorgeous and more expensive storage bench on BallardDesigns.com. The only problem besides the price it the lack of tufting on the Ballard bench.
Wooden chest. My bed's in the corner - the chest fills in the space between the end of the bed and the other wall (yeah, my room is tiny). On the other hand, it's handy - storage, and it's somewhere to put a fan (essential for Australian suppers!) and my phone/alarm clock.
Nothing. I like to make the bed easily.
I used to have a stack of vintage suitcases at the foot but since moving to a new place they are lined up under the bed instead. They look great with my antique wrought iron frame.
I'm not a fan of having furniture at the end of the bed that is taller than the bed, but I think a smaller-scale bench (like #4 and #6) or a trunk looks great. We currently have nothing at the end of the bed, but we do have room for a shallow bench, like #6 - and it would be a great place to put on one's shoes - so I've been thinking about it...
I agree that whatever you put at the foot of the bed should not be taller than the bed. I don't have anything against the foot of my bed, but I always loved the look of a trunk/chest. I used to have an antique steamer trunk at the foot of my bed when I was in high school... I'm going to my family home for xmas and I'm going to see if it's still in the garage, because that thing was awesome. It still won't go at the foot of my bed if I find it, though, because I don't have the room. But one day, maybe. :)
In general, I don't like the look of chairs/tables/desks at the foot of the bed. I am not opposed to having a multipurpose bedroom and making use of space there (mine has a small wooden antique desk and chair for writing on one side of the bed as well as an upholstered Victorian chair for reading/putting on makeup on the other side), but I still don't think you should put stuff directly up against the bed. That just seems like bad feng shui to me or something.
