What's Better: Vinyl or Cloth Placemats?

Good Questions

Q: I just purchased a relatively expensive dining room table from Room and Board and realized I'm going to need some daily protection from glasses and plates by way of placemats. I don't know if I'm overthinking this, but I'm debating what is better... vinyl or cloth? The vinyl seems more protective in terms of cushioning and as a barrier for heat and cold, but will condensation drip through the vinyl weave? Is it better to have absorbent cloth?
