One of our daily blog reads is Life According to Celia. She always introduces us to great clothes, easy recipes and whatever is on her mind. Yesterday, she mentioned that she recently participated in a series called, What's on Your Nightstand?
All this month, fellow blogger, Kate (from The Goodie Life) is asking her favorite writers to take pics of their nightstand. The ladies write in giving us a glimpse into their lives--and their bedside etiquette. Kate views a bedside table as a "public medicine cabinet" and we couldn't agree more. The voyeur in us took notice of a few things from this ongoing series. Some of the things we really liked;
Using the nightstand to store the books you read while traveling. The beside table can act as a memento of all your travels--a nice sentiment for the area where you lay your head.
One blogger opts to store her alarm clock in the hallway closet instead of using the bedside table. Her reasoning--the ticking keeps her awake and by stowing it far away, she has to get up in the morning to turn it off.
Celia uses the body of her lamp to hang whatever necklace she wore that day. It looks romantic and flirty and its a great temporary place for jewelry to live.
Apartment Therapy readers, what does your nightstand say about you? Is it a place for your cell phone and water glass to land? Or is it (as Kate says), a public medicine cabinet?

Time to clean my nightstands.
ummmmmmmmmmmmmmm... not sayin'.
Mine's more like a vanity; I sit on the bed and put on my makeup, lotion, perfume, and jewelry, so that's what's on the top of my nightstand. Plus a couple of guide books for London and Provence, where we're headed in May.
Unlike Bittersweet, I put all my fun stuff in the drawer. :)
Alarm clock, glasses, flashlight.
Wow, I sound like a monk. I swear I'm not a monk.
On the nightstand?
Lamp, Water Carafe, Eyeglasses, a couple magazines or a book.
Under the nightstand?
Slippers.
In the nightstand?
Top drawer: Box of Kleenex, alarm clock, bag of cough-drops, shoehorn.
Bottom drawer: None of your business.
books, books, books, um, a few more books, maybe a magazine, books. there are books on the floor that have been knocked off the nightstand. well. you get the idea. Oh, and a lamp, alarm clock/cd player and reading glasses.
Fabulous light up pagoda lamp, books, readers and an old moonglow clock. Plus good smelling candle.
In the drawer? I will never tell....
A stack of books, my alarm clock, and a chinoiserie lamp are the functional things; the far corner is decorated with a collection of gold and white porcelain boxes, a green Japanese fan in a votive holder, and a few origami animals I made in pastel flowered paper. The stand itself is pale green with gold drawer pulls. It's actually probably the nicest "tableau" in the house.
Lamp, alarm clock, hand lotion, lavender mist, lip balm, coaster for nightly water glass, a book on top and many stacked on the lower shelf...maybe a magazine, sometimes a little chocolate.
oooo i have the domino book
so goood
books, books, books, magazines, books, a basket full of books on the bottom shelf and a stack of books next to the nightstand. Lamp is a wall sconce with elbow so I have more room on the nightstand for... books.
Kleenex. Glasses. Cuticle oil. Alarmclock/radio.
Functional.
Left side: Amy Sedaris' 'I Like You: Hospitality Under The Influence'. A silver bullet-shaped lamp. An alarm clock. A big art glass bowl full of keys, pens, iPod headphones, cufflinks, interesting rocks and plastic toys. Two framed collages made from dead bugs from New Guinea.
Right side: iPod dock, aspidistra, a vintage postcard, another alarm clock and a rainbow-coloured wooden toy.
I like this thread - it's is all very enlightening. For example, who knew that bepsf is like 100 years old? ;)
Lamp. Orange tree, 2 hoyas, 42 seedlings and a purple LED grow light.
I guess that is insightful after all...
Nothing. I have a small shelf on the wall for my glasses, that's it. I don't read or watch tv in bed, so no need for one.
my diary , a nice box that has meds and rings i take off at night, water, kleenez , lamp , cellphone that serves as an alarm too ..
My favorite so far is sophiahelix's nightstand, it sounds lovely!
Left: iHome, coaster & glass, a couple books, vitamins, glasses case, flashlight, sleep mask (I put it over the glow of the iHome at night) and cocoa butter.
Right: Lamp, travel alarm clock, raku votive holder, carafe, reading material, and CDs.
Lamp, flashlight, clock, little piece of art made for me by my husband, a few books and... a gameboy. I have a Dr. Mario addiction.
Sprigs of eucalyptus, lamp, alarm clock, nail polish.
Trish 1980, the quilt's from the Garnet Hill catalog.
Right now it's a clear lucite lamp, my iphone (it acts as my alarm clock, plus I listen to audiobooks on it as I'm drifting off to sleep some nights), a candle, and my current read, Notes From a Small Island by Bill Bryson :-)
IN the nightstand: books!
On the nightstand: a lamp, clock, and dala horse :)

Touch sensitive lamp, cell phones (one of them also works as my alarm clock), a book or two, a bottle of water, nose spray if I'm sick and hair clips/bands I used that day.
a handmade coaster and usually an emtpy glass or two, a turquoise porcelain owl, and my cell phone (also acts as an alarm, on which I push snooze for an average of 20 min. in the mornings...i should really consider the opposite-side-of-the-room tactic)
Other side: table covering - a flowery scarf I bought at a market in Moldova; table top - a skinny, white dish for earplugs and...at the moment....a big bag of pistachios.
I really dislike my nightstand-it's one of those cheap tables with a skirt and a glass topper.
Lamp, alarm clock, ear plugs, perfume, lip balm, magazines/books
books, lamp, water glass, books, alarm clock, notebook, pen, allergy pills, books, books on the floor completely surrounding the nightstand, coloring book, colored pencils, books.
Lamp, alarm, eyeglasses case, and whatever book I'm reading
Plies of books and magazines, lip balm, lotion, alarm clock (unused), phone charger, and unmentionables... Can't wait until my new nightstand arrives next week, and there's a drawer for the unmentionables!
On top: hobnail milk glass lamp, cheap digital alarm clock (because I like to check the time when I wake in the night--but I use my cell phone as an alarm), morning glory teacup and saucer with coins and jewelry in it, water class (on a Delirium Tremens beer coaster), bc, moisturizer, sleep mask.
In the drawer: jewelry, nail clippers, Kershaw knife (a gift from my military brother), sticky tabs for marking books, decks of cards, pens, odds and ends.
On the lower shelf: books, magazines, journals.
Unfortunately I also have a tendency to deposit random things on or below my night stand when I'm not sure what else to do with it. Bad habit. makes it cluttered and junky a lot of the time.
Ugh. Water Glass.
