Q: We're looking to invest in some Metro shelving (that commercial-looking metal shelving) for our utility room. We'd like something strong and sturdy in a chrome finish, and under $300 for a basic set of shelving. Casters would be a bonus. There are a bewildering number of options out there (Williams-Sonoma, Ikea, Container Store, Amazon, actual commercial Metro shelving and knockoffs at all sorts of other stores-- everyone seems to carry some version of wire shelving, at all sorts of price points), and you have this post, but a dedicated post would be even better!
If AT readers could weigh in on what they've found to be the best value and overall experience when purchasing and assembling this type of shelving that would be very helpful to us.

A few years ago, I went to a showroom that sells shelving and racks for stores. (I don't remember exactly what our Google search was, but it wasn't hard to find such a place.) The prices were reasonable, and the stuff is SUPER sturdy because it's meant to hold up to a lot of use.
I bought 4 at Costco. They're solid as all get out, and they were only $100 each. I'm in Canada, but the Costco website has some listed in different sizes and colours (chrome and black.) If this long-assed link doesn't work, I went to the Costco page and searched 'wire shelving.'

I agree- costco has some of the best and most affordable I've seen. I now have about 5 in my garage and they hold everything from tools to camping supplies and gardening stuff.
I bought mine at Sam's Club for about $100. They're very sturdy and have casters. They're a lot heavier than what you will find at Target or WalMart.
I also bought mine at costco for under $100 and they have lasted 6 years not one problem, still good as new!
I got mine in a set at BBB with those 20% coupons years ago. Didn't have all the options that the Container store had so I bought misc parts there too. I think it was intermetro.
I'm a Metro enthusiast. I probably have about 6 of these units scattered around my NYC apt. I've tried several brands ranging in price and have found all of them to be equal.
I think one of the first steps in planning the space is to decide what configuration you want for your space, and pick a shelf size (think depth and width). Different brands offer different size shelves. For example, the InterMetro units at Container Store usually go up to 4' max width. Their Metro brand units and units you might find at Kitchen supply stores usually offer larger widths and hold more weight per shelf, 500lbs vs. the InterMetro apprx 200lbs. Every once in a while Container Store has a sale on the kits on these units; I find it's a good cost effective starting point, and then buy individual pieces to customize. You also want to think of overall height, if you want casters, etc. I find most parts seem to be inter-changeable (with the exception of some casters).
Other than Container Store, I've also bought some very inexpensive units at Kmart (in black). At the office, I've put together several units from Uline, which is a great supply resource. http://www.uline.com/BL_3878/Adjustable-Open-Wire-Shelving NYC is full of kitchen supply stores that sell these units and their parts. Good luck!
I got mine at Lowe's. It isn't quite as good as the one an old roommate got at Sam's Club, but still pretty good. (The Sam's Club one came with casters and these plastic shelf liner things so you could put small things on the shelves and they wouldn't fall through).
I live far from any of the big box stores and so I bought my numerous Metro-style shelves on-line. Even with the shipping they were quite reasonable. I got them at www.shelving.com
With this outfit you can configure your shelving just how you want it -- height, width, depth. And they are having a sale right now -- 35% off all wire shelving!

Sams Club has them for $99 too.
Mine are from Target were all well under $100 and have lasted well for years. Love them. No casters however.
Costco, hands down. But go to Home Depot or Lowes to get a rubber mallet or dead-blow hammer to assemble them. Regular hammers makes dents in the shelf's wire construction. Fists get dents from shelf's wire construction.
Lowes! Didn't get the casters, but they've lasted for a very long time now (without a rubber mallet to but them together - maybe mine were just broken in?) and they were super cheap.
I bought a 4-Tier shelving unit from Amazon and have been very happy with it. The brand is Whitmor and seemed to have good reviews. Only $70, which was a big plus!
I got mine at Lowes. I think the unit was $50, plus casters which may have been $20. It was very easy to put together. I didn't press each shelf all the way down until I was sure I had them laid out the way I wanted them. Although I saw Lowes had a $10 "assembly fee" if you weren't inclined to put them together yourself. :) I work with real metro shelving at work and see no difference in quality between Lowes' and the real stuff.
I, too, got two sets from Lowe's eight (!) years ago for about $80 each, and are still in good enough condition to be used as my entertainment center in my studio. In the past, they have been closet shelves, a desk, and general storage. These things are so versatile and take a beating.
We just outfitted our new kitchen and basement with TONS of metro-type shelving! We got most of the units at Lowe's (by far the best value of the box stores in Chicago and trust me, we spent a lot of time pricing them out!). Then we ordered accessories from SevilleClassics.com. The shelf liners were WAY cheaper than any other option we could find in store or online. They also had a nice 18x18 option, which worked perfectly for turning two full 48x18 units into one L-shaped option. We also ordered casters from there, again, the best value we found! Shipping prices were painful, but the overall price was still the best we found.
The Container Store also carries InterMetro, as in http://tinyurl.com/6hmvoz9
I got a smaller version at Bed, Bath & Beyond and used the coupon.
I bought this cart on Amazon: http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0002O9HXU/ref=oh_o03_s00_i00_details. It's super sturdy and you can't beat the price!
I really like Metro brand of Shelving compared to the knock-offs. The Metro brand is the Cadillac of shelving and comes in so many different sizes, configurations, finishes, and colors. This is ideally suited for my home where shelving needs to go in different spaces, need to be of a certain height and sizes and fit with the decor. Costco sells a one size fits all wire shelving that is cheap, but does not go with my interior design ideas. In addition, the Costco, Lowes, and Home Depot all sell products made in China, whereas Metro is a USA manufacturer. I would rather stick with Made in USA products. I purchased from a Metro supplier that understood my needs. I got my Metro Shelving from NHSMEDIA - http://www.nhsmedia.com/metrowire.htm. I was very happy with their expert staff, service, and pricing.
There are a ton of options out there, there is a guide on what to look for in wire shelving
We only sell only Genuine Metro Products.......no compromises.....no disappointments.
