There was a day when we all carried some type of paper planner and referred to them religiously. Then there was the palm pilot, remember that? Now, there are so many ways to keep organized I have a hard time compiling my various methods into one master calendar! My resolution for 2011: simplify my calendar with a master organizing method...
The only question is which style of calendar should I commit to? There are so many options:
1. Calendar as art, just to keep track of the date.
2. iPhone or blackberry calendar
3. Desk paper calendar to write long notes on and every detail of the day
4. Day Planner that you carry with you and refill every year
Since I'm right-brained I tend to gravitate towards color and large visual cues scattered about my workspace. My husband, the left-brained, has everything in a calendar on his iPhone and constantly sends me invite requests, which I never respond to further complicating our organizational differences.
How do you get your dates in a row these days? Do you have any plans to redefine your organizational calendar style in 2011?

I use my iphone, but I still buy a cool calendar just to add a little more design in my office space. My favorite has always been the Pentagram Calendar! Typography at its best.
Google calendar synched to my Iphone. I use an errands program separately for things that I needto do with due dates instead of just appointments. Have a pretty desk calendar as art too :)
I have everything on my iPhone. If I forget to look at the calendar at home, I'm out of luck if I have somewhere to be that day. My phone goes where I go, so I get alerts.
I have a desk calendar at work, but I don't use it. It's just decoration.
I'm going the DIY route to use up a collection of papers and blank journals. A wall calendar just to keep up with the basic (date, appointments); a day planner for more detail as needed and journal; my BB phone for reminders. My life is very simple so I don't have to schedule everything.
I still use a filofax for personal use and am lost without it! For work I rely on a day book.
I have electronic calendars and have to use them for work, but I would be much happier if I could have a large yearly organiser on the wall to write on instead!
Day planner carried with you and refilled - why ruin a good thing? ..plus they are fun to look through at the end of the year. :) Although it's been harder and harder to find a good brand that puts out refills each year because of the switch to paperless organization.
MOLESKINE
@lishlash - last year my father in law asked for a new filofax for Christmas, and we had to google it! Our generic term was always "day planner" regardless of the brand or type.
For scheduling, I use MS Outlook (business) and GCal (personal) but I sync the two to my iPod Touch so I can see everything at once.
I also have an artwork calendar in my kitchen and one published by my company in my office. I also have a very large fifteen-months-at-a-glance calendar in my office, which is handy since I am an accountant and must constantly refer to dates in other months.
I have a chalkboard which I use to create multicolored notes to myself of important dates (auditions, flights, etc.) But I use my iPhone to keep track of everything else. I can see at a glance how many days I booked work that month and what I have coming up. It's a great visual cue for me. I also carry around a mini notebook to keep track of the more detailed info (i.e. where we're filming, what time, what I'm wearing, etc.) So I guess I have three calendars!
- Multiple Google Calendars synced to iPhone, using gCal SMS reminders to keep me on time.
- Calvetica app on iPhone, cause it's purty.
- Remember the Milk on desktop and iPhone for all tasks, great and small.
- Moleskine, because sometimes you just want to write it down.
Next year, I'm switching back to the Slingshot day planner -- DIY created with lots of useful information, independent bookstore lists, book suggestions, etc.
I use a printable calendar from the web for decoration and marking off of the days. Then i keep a digital version handy such as Google Calendar to keep appointments etc.
Since I am Right brain too, I need visuals and I need tactile, something I can actually hold, touch and interact with. 11 years ago, I thought my daytimer dilemmas (i.e. finding that 'perfect one') were over-I bought a Palm Zire, and although I loved it and hw it made me feel tech savy, hip and oranized, the bottm line is....I just Love Stationary; fresh notebooks, new patterns and designs to suit my mood, I love the idea of being able to 'start over', and even though I rarely, read notebooks, journals and daytimers from the past, I do like to collect them for nostalgia.
I've tried Cozi, I've tried Moleskine, I've tried my iPod....none of them work for me like a dayplanner from Wal-Mart & a gel pen.
I've never had much luck with regular planners or electronic calendars (forget to write things in, forget to look at them), so I customized a system.
I use 5x8 cards that fit in a stand on my desk so they're always in sight. One has a weekly calendar for appointments/reminders, and the other is a prioritized task list.
In addition to this, I a small clipboard "docket" on my desk pre-printed with areas for logging contacts, shopping list, bill tracking, passwords, etc. At the end of a week, those items get noted/filed where they belong. The finished cards are filed by month and give me a great record of what I've been doing.
I use an electronic calendar at work but everything is backed up in the Franklin Covey organizer I've been refilling since 2002. The binder that I thought was outrageously expensive back then is still going strong even with heavy daily use!
I also get two huge calendars every year from cdjapan.com, one for my cubicle, one for home, just because I love them.
Like the author I use a beautiful art calendar, a smart phone calendar, a tear-off desk calendar for long-term planning for my ecommerce business, and a day planner for planning and daily notes. I also use the calender provided by my email server. Its all beginning to feel like too much. And I have fallen back on the use of a steno pad to keep a master list of to-dos! I want to downsize to about three of these.
I was a long time fan of the handwritten day planners. The ones I loved were by Graphic Image, and they had month at a glance and then week at a glance. They are bound in a colorful and sturdy faux leather.
Unfortunately, and pardon the fact that I am apples target audience, the Calander on iPhone is incredible. Especially since I can sync it with the calendar on my computer.
I have a pretty simple little calendar on my desk to keep track of the date and add a little whimsy. However, I keep track of my life through iCal on my computer and iPhone. Everything from work tasks to simple home projects I need to remember go on my calendar.
I use my iPhone synced to my computer for my everything, do-all, end-all calendar, but I also have on my desk a deskplanner where I sketch in work-related events. Each week, on MOnday morning, I go through the iPhone and the paper calendar, make sure they are synced, and put necessary events on the weekly to-do list which comes in my essential notebook (which is a repurposed half-size three ring telephone address book). In there, I have emergency contacts (like snow closings), a half-size file folder for each project with an "urgents" or active sheet, a notepad, and the afore-mentioned calendar. Using this system, I haven't forgotten any major appointments or been to a meeting without at least the essentials for a while. It helps my ADD.
I sadly just scribble the date and time for major things on a white board in our kitchen...I don't like messing up the calendars I buy by writing on them. Plus the box is too small.
I just have a standard calendar on the wall. I really like how pretty calendars have gotten lately like the one in the posted image, but those aren't really all that practical.
I need the ones with the boxes so there is room to circle and take notes. somehow I can't get my S.O to use it the same way despite it being a few feet away from his head most of the time.
I use the Moleskine planner-notebook. It's PERFECT for me because there is a week-planning page and the facing page is a notebook for you to scribble whatever. I use it to plan my budget, note any to-dos and whatever. There is also an extra pocket at the back for odds and ends. I also occasionally use gmail calendar when I'm extra swamped and I actually have to do time blocks to make sure everything I need to do gets DONE. At work, I use google calendar.
What are good apps to sync your gmail calendar to your iphone? I tried one (can't remember the name) but it wasn't that great.
I use my Outlook calendar at work. If a meeting isn't on there, I'm going to miss it.
For personal use, I buy a new calendar every year. One small enough to fit in my purse is best. I usually get a pretty one from Barnes and Noble, but this year my husband gave me a Moleskine one. It really is perfect.
I tried to just use my iPod Touch calendar when I got it earlier this year, but I like to be able to see all of my appointments without having to click open each day.
I am a month-at-a-glance day-planner book type of girl. If it isnt written in that calendar, it isnt happening. Also, everything is written in pencil.
Honestly, I love looking at images and artwork, but all the pretty-looking calendars are un-usable unless you're just looking at the date.
I find that if I depended on electronic calendars, i wouldn't use them. I dont always keep my cell-phone/laptop/computer charged or close by or on, but my monthly calendar I carry in my bag.
iCal. I work at home a lot, so the alarm feature is handy. I'm hoping to get an iPhone and will use it the same way.
So funny that this post came up today, when I headed to the midtown stationery store where for years I've bought my annual Filofax refill (week on two pages; lined) and found the store...gone. I guess paper really is passe!
I use Google Calendar synced with my ipod. Haven't upgraded to an iphone yet because I don't have cell service where I live, making a data package useless. But...that means when I go into town, I have to carry two devices, my cell phone and my ipod. But at least I have my calendar with me. Really, the only problem that has caused is I have not found a good way to synchronize phone numbers between my ipod and phone.

multiple color-coded google calendars.
Google Calendar syncs with my droid and has saved me countless times. I also keep a big desk calendar at work that I have fun filling out at the start of each month with colored pencil doodles. I should probably just get a sketch pad instead.
