I'm not sure how old I was when I learned the word "wanderlust", but I knew the instant I did, that I had it... big time!
A German word, Wanderlust is defined as "a strong desire to travel," and is closely associated with another German word that I love - Fernweh, which literally translates to "farsickness" or "an ache for distant places". For me, it translates to a strong desire to go, well....everywhere!
That's right, I want to go to every single place listed on that signpost, and back again. Tokyo via India? You betcha! Tokyo via the North Pole? Absolutely! Rome, Johannesburg, Madrid, London, Paris? Count me in! I want to sail, go on safari, shop the medinas, and ride the rails. I want to bike in Amsterdam, sip wine in Tuscany and see the ballet in Moscow. I want to start at one end of the country (any country!) and end at the other, stopping a million places in between. Prague, Portland, Paris, Poughkeepsie - please! It seems there's no end to places I want to go and things I want to see.
But how about you? Where would you go if you had no limitations? No budget constraints, a restriction-less vacation? I'm dying to know, what's your dream destination??

Shaw's Original Fir...
Bora Bora. Now.
north and south poles.
tahiti.
sweden.
new york and new orleans (been to both several times; just love 'em and want to go back)
paris.
india.
everywhere really. :)
kathy
maine,new york.
The isle of skye , maybe iceland..
The mountains of Tuscany! I've been drooling over these tours: http://www.sapori-e-saperi.com/tours-a-courses/15-small-group-tours for years...maybe one day!
Into space.
The Seychelles; Cape Cod; Grand Canyon; Vigin Gorda
Off the top o' my head :)
I'm dying to do Southeast Asia, but expensive plane tickets + minimal time off for vacation = not feasible. There are too many places I want to go in the area to relegate it to a 1 week trip... Start with Australia, then Indonesia, Cambodia, Vietnam, and India, India, India!
Also, I just came back from Big Sur, CA and I'm ready to go back any time now!
I'm with Denisol! Bora Bora is at the top of the list.
Jeju Island, Agra, Tokyo, Nürburgring, the Canary Islands, Capri, Hong Kong... and the list goes on for miles
Antarctica!
You gonna fly to Argentina, head down by the "train to end of the world" (something like that) before you get to the dock to the ship that will take you to Antarctica. Best time to go is Nov-Jan (Summer for southern hemisphere).
Antarctica is so expensive and require a lot of energy and long vacation days. It's outside my budget right now, and I won't have time when I have kids, and I won't have energy when I'm old. So it is always a dream destination for me.
Rome!
Patagonia, Stewart Island, Seychelles, Bora Bora.
It's not he getting there for many places, but the cost of being there.
@Ronsmom, Virgin Gorda is quite overrated. St. John, USVI is far better.
Which reminds me...Mustique.
The World
Easy - Poitou charentes region of France, been here 3 years holidaying now and it's great. Good food, wine and weather -going home to UK tomorrow boooo!
back home to singapore! all over europe, someplace to see the aurora borealis. i think @art is necessary summed it up, everywhere!
South of France please. And then Bali.
As much of America as I can see for the rest of my life. I want to experience as much of my country before this life is over.
EUROPE AND THE U.S.A. (CALIFORNIA BORN) WANT TO SEE ALL OUR OUR NATIONAL PARKS.
I absolutely adore travelling. I am so jealous of travel bloggers, what a dream job. I have slowly been ticking places off my go to list over the years and my opinion is that with patience, (and saving) I will eventually get to the rest on my list which include Malaysia, Jordan and Iceland. So if i could go anywhere right now, no expense spared it would be home to the Bahamas, but to an out island, a private island, with just a small boutique resort on it. Ideally there would be a hammock. And an open bar.
Everywhere and anywhere!! As long as there is room and time with my camera I'll be happy.
bhutan!
Greece is my current top foreign travel destination. There are too many places inside the States that I still need to hit up, especially in the Pacific Northwest and western states in general.
Antarctica, now, via S. America ... that's my dream. I have been to the polar circle north in Norway and it was a dream landscape.
when I was a kid I remember saying how much I wanted to go to New Orleans, Paris, and the Giant's Causeway in Northern Ireland. I used to find these places on maps and dream. As an adult I got to visit each of these places several times, taking people with me or going on my own & I would definitely go back again and again.
A friend'd dream was to see the bulbfields in Holland in bloom, but he passed away before he could go, so I went for him and it was a profound experience.
Iceland, if I can't make it to Antarctica...
Train tour of Japan!
I want to stay in one of those ice igloos and watch the northern light high up north in Norway or Sweden. I want to go badly!
No one to go with me right now as all my friends hate cold places. And I hate the sun and beaches... Go figure...
thailand and cambodia.
one day...
Everywhere that doesn't have things with too many legs, slithery things, or nasty two-legged creatures lurking about.
The U. K., Australia and New Zealand.
Yep. Bora Bora is the #1 spot on my list, which is quite extensive. A girl can dream...
I'd go to Finland. Or the Maldives. Opposites yes, but both enchanting!
Santorini, Tuscany and anywhere in Costa Rica!
In no particular order: Turkey, Vietnam, Patagonia, Alaska, Borneo, New Zealand.
I tried to make a list of my top 10 choices several years ago, but I really had trouble limiting it to 10 places. And my list changes all the time depending on what strikes my fancy! Next up is a trip to Madrid and Barcelona in October, but I'm already planning on where to go after that.
No budget limitations? The World! So many nooks and crannies I have left to see, but my favorite to go to (and I've been over and over) is London. There's just something about that places that sticks inside me.
The only place (so far) that's come close was Galway, Ireland. As much as I loved my month in that country, it was Galway that stole my heart.
But of the places I've not been yet, I have to just say the world, because there's so very many places I'd see if I didn't need to worry about budgets!
I am a wanderluster for sure! Italy, Dead Sea, Iceland, Hawaii, Egypt.....return to Paris, NYC, London....
Antarctica. India. The Czech Republic. Morocco. Peru. The Cappadoccia region of Turkey. Vietnam. Sri Lanka. Base Camp of Mt. Everest (no higher, thanks!) Denmark.
I am very fortunate in that I have been to most of the places on my list already. So my destinations are now more specific:
- The Blue Mountains (Australia) and inland eastern Australia
- The Tarkine Wilderness in Tasmania (just booked a trip in October to go there)
- An Icebreaker tour of the Kara Sea in Siberia (costs 10k for 6 days - something to save for in my retirement I think!)
- China, Mongolia, and then the Trans Sib through Russia.
And then everywhere that's left.
Incidentially, since there are so many US-ites here, I also have a trip planned through parts of the US next August - either starting or ending in Texas for my friend's 30th. I am thinking of spending 3 weeks mostly driving around - no idea where yet though! I will be mostly avoiding the big cities except for Las Vegas (for the insanity), New Orleans (for the music) and New York (for the shopping). I may head up into Banff in Canada at some point, and obviously the Grand Canyon. If anyone has any suggestions for out of the way amazing destinations, tours or oddities - things I wouldn't find in a guide book - please post your ideas! I am much more interested in random small towns and weird events than I am in looking at monuments and other tick-the-box items. ;-)
I want to go on a world tour, visiting every continent. It would be amazing to spend as much time as I wanted in places that interest me. I would love to live 2-6 months in all of my favorite cities: Paris, Venice, Santa Fe, Carmel, New York and Montauban.
Wishlist:Cambodia, Istanbul, Athens, New York to begin with.
Sydney and Britain again and again.
Long list but considering I have not travelled since the past 10 years...
Antarctica
Tibet - the Himalayas ( when they are free from china)
Morocco -Sahara desert
Africa - African safari
A year in France
Azores
Galapagos
New Zealand
Spain
Capri
Bali
Palawan
India
Turkey
Greece
Iceland
... Basically travel around the world
Japan too
Cambridge, England (although I wouldn't mind the one in Massachusetts too), Istanbul, Dubrovnik and anywhere else that has snow/winter and no geckos.
It would be a tour that would rooted in food. Pretty much any place that touches on the Mediterranean would do me just fine.
Uganda to see the mountain gorillas.
"Incidentially, since there are so many US-ites here"
We're called Americans.
My bucket list includes traveling all continents at least once.
A pastry tour of Prague, Budapest, and Vienna.
Tanzania and then Bali.
Maldives, London, Copenhagen, Portland, New York, Los Angeles, Rome, Paris, Paris, Paris, PARIS. Milan, New Delhi, Paris, Madrid, Barcelona, Paris, Home
Norway, Greenland, Iceland . . .
I've always wanted to go to Italy, and if I had no limitations, I'd visit some Pacific Islands and Japan. Lots of other places, too, but those would be early on my list. PS Mountain gorillas are actually in Rwanda, not Uganda. But I think it's an easy trip from one to the other. :)
Paris, not in the Summer.
Morocco!
Helsinki, London, Marrakech, Chicago, the Florida Keys, Dubai, Portland, Amsterdam, Marseilles.
I'm with Susan Sontag (RIP): I haven't been everywhere yet but it's on my list!
@CoconutKoko: Yay, Chicago -my kind of (home)town! Italy is next on our list, then a short jaunt to Belize (SCUBA), then Peru (Machu Picchu).
Gumbo on the Bayou!
Turkey, Vietnam, Sardinia, and Sri Lanka
I'm with Duane Hill—space!
Terrestially speaking:
Tuscany
Spain
Return to Australia
New York City is ALWAYS on the list
Travel isn't just about space, it's also about time:
Long weekend: New Orleans (my fave), Amsterdam, Sevilla
Week: Kyoto (staying in a traditional inn), driving around Tuscany, rafting a wild river somewhere out west (US)
Month: A Himalayan trek, Morocco
I'd love to visit our country's Batanes islands, France and its countryside, Ireland, and Japan. :)
Istanbul
Barcelona
More more more India. Specially Meghalaya and Arunachal and Sikkim.
Haha oops, I momentarily forgot that none of my American friends has a sense of humour. Excpet the Texanite, but he says Texas isn't really America anyway.
