In the game of life there's furniture that acts as a temporary placeholder until we can afford what we really want and then there are pieces we save up for. In addition there's also those in which we dream about owning but in all reality know that owning a sofa that costs the same as a car is probably out of consideration — well unless winning the lottery is an option. What's your dream piece of furniture?
Although I used to dream of quirky designer chairs for my home, now that my space is larger I only have eyes for ridiculously over-priced sofas from the European decor magazines. I spend my evenings scrolling through press releases and gazing at them online, and although I know the purchase of one could pay off my college degree, it doesn't make them any less attractive to me.
What piece would you love to have in your home? Do you drool over sprawling modern headboards made from entire trees or do you love the sleek lines that vintage pieces have to offer? Share your thoughts in the comments below!

Z2 iPod Dock and Wi...
The ball chair.
The Togo sofas pictured! I have been wanting them since I first set eyes on them a few years ago.... SOOOOOOooooo expensive, and not just EXPENSIVE expensive, ridiculously expensive.
There's no such thing as getting just one "dream" piece of furniture - you'll realize everything else has to be replaced too.
For me, it's always been the Cherner arm chair with the arms that look like a pretzel.
Does hot tub count?
For it's quirkiness and utter gorgeousness, I have to say the Octopus chair by Maximo Riera. You know it's never good when they say "price upon request."
george nelson swag leg desk, womb chair, saarinen table, and anything by jean prouve... someday...
An Eames lounger. I grew up with one and It's so comfortable! Now the shock mounts are broken. I just hope my parents give it to me to get fixed.
the togo and the womb. even if i squander money away from now to retirement, not sure that i would ever actually spend it on those two things. :(
Do floor lamps count? I have always wanted the Fortuny:
http://www.apartmenttherapy.com/ny/good-questions/good-questions-alternative-to-the-fortuny-lamp-062987
But in black, please.
Eames Lounger for sure. I've never actually sat in one but it looks so comfortable.
A Papa Bear chair.
Not to sound like a broken record but... the Eames Lounger.
a 60" marble Saarinen dining table, George Nelson miniature chest and an amazing piece of French Art Deco furniture.
I'm another one that would like an Eames lounger. I love the look of it and I'm certain it would be so comfortable.
I already have the Togo, so the Finn Juhl Poeten Sofa would be my dream...
A Louis Ghost chair, even though it doesn't look comfortable at all.
I want a Bertoia Diamond Lounge chair. I've been coveting them for ages! And I would certainly never turn down an ARCO floor lamp.
A cisco bros. sofa.
Super worn brown leather chesterfield sofa. Or okay, I guess one in perfect condition would be fine too because then I could wear it in to fit my own bottom. :)
A 9' long custom Indigo blue suede sofa based on the design of the one Coco Chanel had in the salon of her Rue Chambon, Paris townhouse...
Ooooh. The Castore Lamp. :o)
The perfect antique daybed.
Right now, I'd love a $4000 Bunny Williams
I covet a Jielde lamp. I love love love them.
A bathtub couch a la Breakfast at Tiffany's. I've been wanting one since I was fifteen.
2 Sayl chairs, an eames rocker and hang it all. Is that cliche?
Probably an antique grandfather clock, either Swedish mora or chinoiserie.
Or a secretary desk with an attached, door-front hutch that is also one of the above styles.
I do like the marble-topped Saarinen dining tables but my husband hates them (I know!) so I think I am tragically short even one iconic modern piece in my top five "impossible dream" list.
The Moooi "Smoke" series of chairs (and their AMAZING chandelier) -- http://www.moooi.com/producten/30-smoke-dining-chair.html
After 23 years of service "above and beyond the call" I am DYING for a new mattress. I know its not that exciting, but its something I think about EVERY night.
Oh, the smoke chairs! *weep*
Vintage orange George Nelson coconut chair with matching ottoman.
Second, vintage George Nelson marshmellow chair.
I think it would be the sarinan 90 inch dining table and anything by Warren platner. Or a giant beach photo by massimo vitali but that's not furniture.
for me the Eames lounge chair is reasonably comfortable, not great--but better if you put a pillow behind your lower back.
An antique English oxblood-red leather chesterfield sofa with appropriately tarnished brass nailheads
Like @ssdmmf, I'd love a new mattress. High-end dreams include:
(1) Naps on Hella Jongerius's Polder sofa in red
(2) Watching movies and reading nestled in Eero Saarinen's Womb chair
(3) Reading by Arne Jacobson's A J Floor lamp
(4) And ... enjoying the garden sitting in Jasper Morrison's Thinking Man's Chair.
Hm... one day I would like a sofa with traditional english roll arms and various other specific features. This is not particularly aspirational, since there are many similar couches around for <$1600 new, but not something I'd invest in at this point in my life. Actually, I want it because I missed out on this very C&B couch going used for $350 on CL. T.T
I don't think this is too aspirational either, but ONE DAY I will presumably own a place (ahahahahaaa), and can put (possibly more expensive than I know) Trove wallpaper up.
Lilljevach sofa, and an Eames lounger. My dream is that of comfort.
Thonet bentwood loveseat
Mod furniutre..how do I love thee¿ Let me count the ways.
hot pink womb chair
saarinen marble dining table and chairs
egg chair
Marco Zanuso lady chair
ghost chair
red or pink heart cone chair
panton S chair
Barcelona Chair and Sofa.
an Eames rocker
and Tulip table and chairs
Conran Ball Poster bed http://www.casasugar.com/Crave-Worthy-Conran-Shop-Ball-Poster-Bed-1061505
The Le Corbusier Lounge chair! Have you ever actually sat in one? I sat on one at DWR one day and my lower back never felt more at peace. (sigh)
Ooh, actually, I would like the de la espada's double octopus pendant lamp, when someone has invented the tiny energy-efficient lightbulb to go with it. And maybe something frivolous with lots of drawers, like the desire dresser. And I guess I would not say no to the hans olsen compact dining set (I don't know its name).
And a thermomix, but that's not furniture.
... I have a feeling I'm still not aiming high enough. Barely breaking into multiple thousands, here!
My shoot-the-moon dream furniture would include two leather chesterfield sofas, both in either green or red, deep and comfy and indestructible. Ahhhhh.
I am a big fan of chairs and my dream one right now is the Regina II by Paolo Rizzatto. I LOVE IT!
I just decorated our living/dining totally for under €2300...but now I have to get the lighting right, and the lamps I love are very dear. I would go for a real Jieldé floor lamp, too, if I could, or any one (or two!) of the industrial pendants that http:www.skinflintdesign.co.uk sells.....
It's funny you should show the Togo with this post... I first encountered the Togo when I was about 8 or so (when they first came out, actually...), and two different sets of my parents' friends had a set. I vowed that when I moved out of the house, I would get a Togo. And I did. I saved my summer job money for a Togo, and bought it for my first apartment.
My husband loves it too, and so I am sitting on one as I type this.
So, I guess my dream came true!
Apart from that though, I have been dreaming of a Savoir No.2 bed for the past 12 years. Not gonna happen.
Still dream about Axel VerVoordt furniture, and the bar stools in Julianne Moore's kitchen.
The Gino Sarfatti chandelier, and Noguchi light structures, lots of them - they give such a warm, ethereal glow.
After this post from AT from Salone del Mobile:

I fell in love with the deep red sofa and I now discovered there is a gorgeous sofa-bed version too.
http://www.arflex.it/prodotti/sk_prodotti.asp?cat_id=88&titolo=cosa&div_id=
(probably well above my means...)
A big French antique armoire. Affording one isn't the problem (my parents are going to leave me theirs) - finding a home with 10-foot ceilings is! That armoire is much too tall for a standard home, so I'll probably have to move into a loft...
Joe Colombo Elda Chair(s)
Right now it's this Preban Fabricius and Jorgen Kastholm office chair: http://www.1stdibs.com/furniture_item_detail.php?id=526366
a really nice solid walnut console/cabinet.
I would love to own the Forest Canopy bed from Anthropologie.
http://bit.ly/eKXr1q
Also, an octopus chandelier from Adam Wallacavage!
http://www.adamwallacavage.com/octo/index.html
Edward Wormley's "Listen To Me" Chaise Lounge.
Hans Wegner's Flag Halyard Chair
http://www.danishdesignstore.com/products/pp225-flag-halyard-chair-designer-hans-j-wegner
Right now, it's a custom-designed entertainment center that's just over the height of my TV speakers and can house my Wii, my receiver, DVD, VCR and cable box with the TV on top.
I just have to build it.
The Joinery's Tansu Cabinet, heirloom quality, useful (for hiding my junk), and I can imagine my cats dozing on each shelf.
A many-drawered antique library card cabinet!
I have two: The Eames 670 and 671 in black leather and santos palisander, and the Goetz sofa, also in black leather and hopefully santos palisander if Herman Miller ever offer it.
But like another commenter said, the minute you get one piece, you realize you need new everything else to go with it, lol.
It's funny - my fantasy furniture object was always and forever the Togo, but when we were in Boston in March, we wandered into the shop and tried it out, and now, it's just over for me. We're tall people, and it just doesn't work if your spine is that long. I'm actually relieved to have this particular unrequited love affair over now - I can move on at last.
A delicious chesterfield sofa. And a few other pretty vintage/antique sofas and chairs. I'm a sucker for anything tufted :)
The Serge Mouille floor lamp. Pining for years.
OMG..PAUL EVANS CITYSCAPE CANOPY BED...IN CHROME OR CHROME/BRASS-KING SIZE...GIMME GIMME GIMME!!!
