I can't say I have many IKEA products filling my home (which can be attributed in part to the fact that I live in an IKEA desert). There was, however, that year that I lived in Scandinavia and might have visited the store a time or two (or twenty). The few pieces I kept from that period, I recently realized, have been around for twelve years now. My favorite, this alarm clock, is no longer available, though I still appreciate its multi-functional simplicity:
The unfinished wood clock has a symmetrical face that can be read in all directions. Choose which orientation you want to set the clock (like a book, or propped up in an inverted "V") then set the time and alarm accordingly. The volume of the alarm is dampened by closing the clock and louder when the clock is left open.
This simple little design has moved with me through four homes since its purchase, it still works, and I still find it aesthetically pleasing, though it is now well-worn.
Do you have a favorite discontinued IKEA product? What do you treasure about your timeless "vintage" piece now that it can't easily be replaced?
