With summer coming to an end, we're already noticing the days becoming shorter and a bit of a drop in the temperature. It's best to start pulling out all your autumn accessories and avoid catching a cold. However, if you do wind up sick in bed, what would be your go-to movie to pass the time and help you feel just a bit better?
I'm more of a Netflix watcher myself and have a rather sad collection of DVDs on my shelf. Usually when I'm sick I like to hang around the bedroom versus the couch anyway.
While in bed, I like to alternate between watching movies on my laptop and my iPad, depending on what movies I want to watch. Movies on my laptop are more of my favorites while I use the iPad mostly for watching Netflix. I like to set up a "recovery" station on my nightstand, which includes a box of EmergenC, tissues, a glass of water and of course, my iPad.
I tend to want to watch my old favorite flicks rather than trying something new. It offers a level of comfort and familiarity when you're feeling under the weather and at least you know the movie is going to be good. Here are a couple of my go-to favorites based on genre.
Romantic Comedies
Wedding Crashers
I Love You Man
Something's Gotta Give
Midnight in Paris
Movies with Soundtracks I Like
500 Days of Summer
Drive

Animated Films
Anything created by Studio Ghibli (Princess Mononoke, Laputa: Castle in the Sky, My Neighbors the Yamadas)
Anything from Pixar (Up, Wall-E, Finding Nemo)

Wes Anderson Favorites
The Darjeeling Limited
The Royal Tenenbaums
Fantastic Mr. Fox
With the amount of time it takes to get through these, I'm usually recovered by the time I'm halfway through. Throw in a couple Harry Potter books and I'm set.
Which are your go to movies when you are feeling blah?

Commercial Flour Sa...
Definitely some classics like "Some like it Hot" and "Pretty Woman" (well, more modern classics?)... And depending on your heritage, I'm always drawn back to my native Russian movies from the 70s... total propaganda (ha!) but very heart-warming ("Moscow Doesn't Believe in tears", "Office Romance"). Grab those tissues and some hot tea with honey and lemon - Speedy Recoveries!
perfect timing, I have a root canal coming up tomorrow and have a two day "sick" time planned..just in case.
Ferris Bueller's Day Off
Princess Bride and Secondhand Lions.
Pretty in Pink, Sixteen Candles or Romy and Michelle's High School Reunion. Those are three of the handful of my go to movies.
Reviews, both official and from husband and friends, are uniformly BAD, but on a sick day there's nothing like staying home and watching "Practical Magic."
V for Vendetta
I prefer movies that I have never seen. I find it a bit sad to keep watching the same movies over again when there are so many that I have not seen.
If I'm really sick and know I'm going to have a couple days off, Pride and Prejudice the A&E Mini-Series with Colin Firth.
Other wise any musical works, I prefer "Into the Woods" with Bernadette Peters.
It's not technically a movie (since I don't watch the movie as frequently as I do the series) but "Firefly".
Moonstruck and LA Story. You'll feel so much better afterward.
Paris Je T'Aime and Under the Tuscan Sun, for the fantasies of visiting Paris and Italy
I'm with JDOEY. I like rewatching movies if I'm doing something active like cooking or cleaning, but if I'm on the couch and giving the TV my full attention, it's a lot more engaging to watch something new. The time passes much faster.
4 weddings & a funeral
strictly ballroom
Movies I haven't seen before, definitely. Paul Newman's Slapshot is one I could watch again, though.
The Lord of the Rings trilogy. It doesn't matter how many times you fall asleep from cold medicine because whenever you wake up, they're still running around Middle Earth fighting and looking for hobbits.
Yay for the Firefly vote! I second that!
For some reason, I'm really fond of watching & re-watching "The Craft," and although I don't own it, I love the Drew Barrymore movie "Ever After." Not necessarily my favorite movies of all time, either of them, but they are comforting to watch when I'm not feeling well for some reason.
I would never try to watch a new movie when I'm sick, I can't concentrate that well!
I love "Slapshot," too, but somehow it seem too ... vigorous ... for a sick day for me!
Dhamma Brothers is excellent-completely inspirational. Not sure if you can get it on Netflix.
I think TV shows are better than movies if you are really sick because you can watch them all day. Buffy is probably my favorite for marathon watching.
Love Actually and Happy Gilmore.
Amelie, Love Actually and When Harry Met Sally.
i go for 24....you can dip in and out, and when you're sick in bed, you can go 'real time'. i had norovirus once and got through seasons 1-5 in 5 days. it saved me from sick boredom!
Ooo teen-princess movies. :)
That, tea, and a big ol' blanket makes everything better.
@Heidijoe: Those are my favourites, too. The only one I would add is "Up!".
I like the really long, classic musicals when I'm feeling sick: The Sound of Music, The King and I, Singing in the Rain all top the list.
Vicky Christina Barcelona would be my first choice, but Under The Tuscan Sun, Something's Got To Give and Four Weddings and a Funeral are all good runners-up.
When you're sick, you often are drifting in and out of sleep. Therefore, I want a movie that is compelling--but that I don't mind sleeping through sections (because they're familiar to me). For me, those movies are North by Northwest, Rear Window, Hunt for Red October, Hopscotch.
9 to 5
I like to watch The Backs of My Eyelids when I'm sick. I've seen it tons of times, but it never ceases to make me feel better.
I'm sick today! I watched Modern Family on my laptop while I took a 2 hour bath, and Up is currently playing on my tv. Totally agree with tea and a giant blanket!
When Harry Met Sally
Notting Hill
About a Boy
The Star Wars Trilogy!
Dr. Zhivago.
Grosse Pointe Blank, The Princess Bride (natch), and Raising Arizona.
Over and over and over and...
A mixture of old and new movies when possible. Waitress, Groundhog Day, but overall, I prefer movies which are funny, quirky and light. When I'm sick, I find good humor helps.
Mean Girls! It's still funny :)
Anything, haha. Actually, if I'm sick and sleepy, then I will put on Napoleon Dynamite or Ever After. Movies I've seen a billion times, but will hold my attention if I am awake, but they are ones I don't mind sleeping through if I snooze. But new movies are good too, and musicals like 7 brides for 7 brothers and Meet me in St. Louis always keep me entertained.
One day after work feeling snffly, I picked up Moonstruck. Good think I loved it because I ended up with the worst case of flu in my life. Thankfully I was strong enough to work the remote control. Must have watched that movie 10 times. I still love it.
Danny Deckchair!
28 Days Later - at least I'm not dealing with the Rage virus. haha
Cheesy romantic comedies and cheesy action comedies- I can watch them over and over. Sweet Home Alabama, The Holiday, Vin Disel cheese, A Knights Tale. Nothing I have to think about.
Oh, and Breakfast at Tiffany's.
The Secret of Roan Inish.
The 5 hour BBC version of Pride and Prejudice. Colin Firth + camomile tea= I'm feeling MUCH better, thank you.
Foul Play, Seems Like Old Times
The series Boy Meets World on dvd. Also 500 Days of Summer.
Love Actually, Moulin Rouge, 13 Going on 30, Anna and the King
"Dirty Dancing" (if I'm feeling up to that level of conflict and plot reversals); "Mary Poppins," or the old BBC series "All Creatures Great and Small" (if I'm not.)
But since I've become a parent, I haven't really had the luxury of wallowing in a proper sick day!
I usually watch the BBC Pride and Prejudice, Jurassic Park, or Independence Day. Once I had a terrible flu and watched Wag the Dog about 5x in a row. I somehow still like that movie!
I, too, to agree with Atheneum and Jddar above regarding The BBC A&E production of "Pride and Prejudice." I add to this 5 hour gem with 2 more Jane Austin favorites: Persuasion (the 1995 version starring Amanda Root as Anne and Ciarán Hinds as Captain Wentworth), and Emma (both the Gwenyth Paltrow and Kate Bekinsale versions).
For some dumb, silly humor, White Chicks makes me laugh every time. When Terry Cruz sings "If I could fall into the sky....." I lose it.
When I'm sick I DO NOT watch movies that make me feel even worse about myself (Sex and the City etc) so I watch stuff like the Twilight ones and You've Got Mail.
@stude1nm So glad I'm not the only who reverts to teen princess movies when sick. The Princess Diaries, the Prince and Me and, of course, the Princess Bride are my faves!
Enchanted April, Sense and Sensibility, episodes of the 1960's British series, The Avengers.
Breakfast at Tiffany's and Casablanca. I can almost quote every line from both movies. I watch them when I'm sick because I don't mind falling asleep and missing something.
Not movies, but books are my go-to for comfort.
If I had to watch a movie, though, it would be Cold Comfort Farm, Enchanted April, or Strictly Ballroom.
I'm chiming in for the Joss Whedon TV shows, Buffy and Firefly. And West Wing - but that's in sickness and health.
Working Girl, Sat Night Fever, Princess Bride, Breakfast Club.
Yes, child of the 80's.
the Princess Bride
Anne of Green Gables
Pride and Prejudice (BBC)
Little Women (Winona Ryder)
Funny Face
You've Got Mail
You've Got Mail <3
Any of the PBS "House" series (Manor House, Frontier House, etc.), Seven Brides for Seven Brothers, Bringing up Baby, or Rear Window.
Kurosawa and Mifune - Hidden Fortress, Yojimbo, Sanjuro!
Woody - Hannah & her Sisters, Crimes and Misdemeanors, Everyone Says I Love You
You've Got Mail and then Sleepless in Seattle (Tom Hanks and Meg Ryan always make me feel better) Next would be the Anne of Green Gables trilogy set. That takes a whole day :-)
I'm going to be shopping for those sheets next time I'm sick...
My go to is the X-Files. If not that, then something funny like Anchorman or Napoleon Dynamite.
North and South~ awesome.
Notting Hill
Of COURSE, The Princess Bride
Harold and Maude
Hope Floats
The Count of Monte Cristo
Raiders of the Lost Ark
Ken Burn's Lewis and Clark series. Also, PBS's Nature episodes, or Planet Earth. Something like that. In particular, I used to watch a miniseries on the Great Rift that my parents had videotaped for me. I'd fall asleep somewhere around the gorillas and wake up somewhere around the Bab el Mandeb. :) To this day I cherish that VHS like a stuffed animal or a security blanket.
Anything costumey and melodramatic. Pride and Prejudice (any version), Little Women, Singing in the Rain, Jane Eyre... potato chips, ginger ale and chocolate.
Bridesmaids // Wayne's World
Ghostbusters I & II; Cloverfield; I Love You Man :D
Jacques Tati movies! Play time and Traffic. There is always new details to discover:)
I agree with watching series. I've watched and re-watched Pushing daisies and Arrested Development many times while feeling poorly.
The Fearless Vampire Killers
forget movies. i find a show & marathon it. hello dr who & downton abbey.
The early Marx Brothers from "The Coconuts" to "A Day at the Races." Early Woody Allen through "Love and Death." "Some Like It Hot."
Moonstruck. Great story line, and after you know the story, you can let your eyes wander over the interior settings (good for us decor junkies)!
Casablanca is hands down, absolutely my home-for-a-sick-day movie, and BBC's Pride & Prejudice is good to just turn on and fade in and out of sleep
Jane Eyre
Sense & Sensibility
Pride & Prejudice
Northanger Abbey
Persuasion
North & South
Wives & Daughters
In fact, any sort of Regency- or Victorian-period film!
Hmm... Disaster movies, vampire diaries etc. Netflix when my dvd's are exhausted. Oh! and we cannot forget "outbreak" lol.
Anything with Kate Winslett. She looks so healthy.
when harry met sally
I kind of wish I was sick right now.
In You've Got Mail, there's a scene where Meg Ryan is sick in bed and Tom Hanks drops by. He surprises her with daisies, and of course, she's got a great apartment, too.
My question, what's the duvet in the photo?
I don't get sick but if I did I would watch You've Got Mail.
Ferris Bueller's Day off!!
@Adamcole: I think it's IKEA.
RENT or I'll watch my dvds of The Golden Girls or Sex and the City.
Whatever's on tv. Yesterday when I was sick, it was "Kill Bill, Vol. 1"
The duvet in the picture is from Ikea, last season. I have it in my spare bedroom!
Not a complete list:
It Happended One Night
My Man Godfrey
Pride & Prejudice (Colin Firth)
To read: Anne of Green Gables
Anything Meg Ryan/Tom Hanks (or anything Nora Ephron/Rob Reiner, I suppose)
Mean Girls
Memoirs of a Geisha
The Parent Trap (Hayley Mills version)
Love Actually
When Harry Met Sally
The Big Lebowski
Julie & Julia
You've got mail
Pride & Prejudice, the Keira knightley version
Overboard
Christmas Vacation
