Thinking about traveling and shopping and decorating, we started to wonder: where would we most like to spend a day immersed in shopping bliss?
Would we go to Vincon in Barcelona, which is supposed to be some of the best contemporary shopping in the world? We love the quirky, modern eclecticism of Mint in London, but shopping at a far away flea market is even more enticing. So, will it be Paris or Rome? While we're dreaming, we might as well plan for the big one -- the Grand Bazaar in Istanbul!
Where in the world would you go to shop if money and time were not an issue? Would you go international or keep it domestic?

Nomade Express Slee...
The biggest Salvation Army in the world, four city blocks, in Scandinavia. If there was one.
Milan. Italians are the best dressed Europeans and I love their furniture. Surely they have thrift stores??
online!
in just a few hours... let's see.... paper cups, t-shirts, a new mp3 player, some of my mom's meds, a ticket to see U2 (plane ticket included), a laptop, a pair of ghost chairs and even a romero britto original....
yes!! done, 2 hours flat!!! (browsing and processing time included)
ok... i don't live in the u.s. so it's far easier for me!
Besides, at an actual location, i'll take days, since i like to browse every single place and then on my way back, get specific things from specific places.
Copenhagen:
I'd return to the flagship Georg Jensen and Royal Copenhagen stores which are adjacent to one another on the Amagertorv and Hejbro Plads to load up on entire dinner services of sterling silver and china. (I have a beautiful pair of stainless candlesticks I purchased from Georg Jensen there a couple years back...)
Then I'd prowl the adjacent streets between there and Amalienbourg Palace where there are dozens of shops that specialize in antique casegoods and upholstery - from the Danish Modern to the Baroque - and select fantastic pieces sufficient to fill a shipping container to bring back home to the States. Often times these places will have the most amazing room-sized antique Rya rugs as well - I'd have to load up on a few of them too!
I'd then take the train across the Malmo Link to Sweden and the Orrefors factory where I would take the factory tour and load up on all kinds of crystal stemware, barware, vases and bowls...
...and while in Sweden, I might as well swing by the Volvo factory for a tour and to pick up a new convertible to bring home.
Grand Bazaar in Istanbul.. Hey BTW, I love love Cafe Fernando!!! He is an amazing blogger, chef, photographer..:-))
If money are not an issue than first in the Grand Bazaar in Istanbul followed by few days in Milan. Vincon is not my thing, although the bench was comfortable enough to rest my tired legs....;0)
I think I would have to say Morocco. I visited once while I was in high school, much before my interest in home decor took flight. The shops were filled with the most luxurious of goods....
Clearly I have a bit of an obsession with it: http://designfixation.blogspot.com/2010/07/next-stop-marrakech.html
I just returned from Marrakesh. The souks are overwhelming and I shopped and people-watched for days. I'd like to return to discover more off-the-beaten-paths shops. I asked my husband if we could go to Fes next year :)
I would go back to the Grand Bazaar in Istanbul. You could spend a week (and a lot of money) and not experience it all. Nothing beats a carpet salesman's pitch!
Paris.
The huge market I visited in Palermo over a decade ago. I had just enough money to get off the island, and was surrounded by the most gorgeous olives, oranges, and ceramics I'd ever seen. Serious temptation.
The antiques fleamarket in Luik Belgium.
Definitely the Kapali Carsi in Istanbul! I spent a couple of hours there and barely covered a small fraction of the place. It's a bit overwhelming, but such wonderful things can be found there.
Grand Bazaar in Istanbul is great if you can get past all the pushy shop workers. you're almost afraid to show any interest in anything because they become so pushy. The Spice Market in Istanbul has such great fragrance, it's worth a stop too.
i too like Copenhagen for design shopping at the Stroget.
Paris is always nice...
and Soho or 5th Ave NYC!
Am I going to be forgiven for lack of imagination and just choose to go to Ala Moana Center? It is down the road and they have everything.
Any good old American farmer's market.
Please go to JJ market in Bangkok, Thailand
If you don't mind the crowd
I miss shopping on Stroget in Copenhagen on Saturdays. Even if I was mostly only window shopping.
And anywhere that has a good selection of Iittala. I'm looking at you Helsinki.
The Grand Bazaar in Istanbul is pretty cool. If you have a lot of money, you could go crazy. It's pretty easy to get good deals on things. We left with lots of things including a blown glass lamp and many unique pillow cases made from antique material for great deals.
The Antique Market in Paris is pretty amazing as well.
Mumbai (Bombay), India. I was there when I was 18 and unfortunately shopping wasn't the priority. I've always thought I would like to go back and bring home a lot more.
Milan.
I second Paris - only thing about the Bazaar in Istanbul is its basically the same 4 stores over and over and over - and you do have to be tough to deal with the shop owners! I make a game out of it ;-)
Guatemala:
Market in Chichicastenango
Les puces de Paris Saint-Ouen porte de Clignancourt
love that place!
also portobello market and chatuchak
