Q: Has anyone come across a barbecue that can be hung on a window (such as a sash window)? I can't seem to find one. I'm the owner and occupier on the top floor so there are no problems from a neighbor or landlord point of view. Anyone have ideas for how it might be done?

They are cute - I'd like to have one too - I don't know where to find them - I'd try google but in Virginia, it is illegal to have an open fire, such as on a grill, within so many feet of a building - so grilling on the porch or balcony is prohibited by law regardless of what the landlord might say. Maybe it's not that way where you are.
find a metal flower box and buy a metal grate... cut to size and grill it up
that sounds really dangerous. I would be very surprised to see that anyone makes such a thing. There's the danger of it falling below and also of catching the building on fire.
Fire near combustible material, what could go wrong. Might be best to get Geo Forman Grill and grill inside.
You can order this one if you speak Danish:

You would go with a marine BBQ meant for the side of boats. West Marine has various models online. Many have various methods of mounting.
I agree, you might not be able to find it because it might not be a real thing... it sounds really dangerous. If I were your downstairs neighbour, I would have an issue with a hot grill hanging above my window.
But... you might have some luck adapting a boat barbeque to your purposes. Google "boat barbeque" and you'll see what I mean.
If I were you, I would just get a nice indoor grill. You can probably bbq in a park nearby if you really want to do the charcoal thing.
Please, for the love of god, abandon this plan now. This could never be safe.
Since it seems that many folks are recommending adapting a boat bbq grill to this purpose, it is probably worth pointing out that the difference between those two applications is that generally boats are generally surrounded by water, while the side of a sash window is usually made of something very flammable. Also, the only living thing typically found living under a boat grill is a fish, which generally taste pretty good when grilled. The same can not be said for your downstairs neighbors, I'm guessing.
This is against fire code in any civilized place. Just say no.
When we read the news about someone's apartment building going up in flames in a few weeks, we'll all know why...
bbq interior temps don't get much over 500°F. woods immolation point is around 800°F, so if this were a gas setup i'd say no problem, but it seems like you'd be buring coal, and if one of those embers gets up and inbetween a crack or crevise around a wood window frame, you have a prime opportunity for a fire.
not to mention if you have vinyl windows they are going to warp and twist from the heat.
Tell your neighbors to call me if they need an attorney, which, if you attempt to purchase or create and use one of these, I can assure you they will.
Just get a tabletop grill. It probably won't be much more expensive than a DIY and than you can be reasonably sure that it's designed to do what you want.
There are cheaper, similar items (Bodum is a name brand, I guess) and also propane options. But yeah, I would totally not want to be your downstairs neighbor or just walking by on the sidewalk if you were going with your original plan.
You could get one of these deck mounted grill shelves and put a small hibachi type grill on it. I must say I agree with everyone that this sounds like it least has the potential to be extremely dangerous. Are you at all familiar with Murphy's Law?

I mean this from the sincerest place in my heart: that is a really bad idea.
David, are you by chance one of those careless souls who put all kinds of stuff out on their fire escapes?
Hmmm... you could use metal planters boxes and cookie racks, I suppose... but only if you're planning to hook it onto a metal balcony...
Otherwise, I second the George Foreman! You can still bring it outside as long as you have the electrical for it! I swear by my George Foreman - I made dinner for 8 on that thing, and it was delicious!
Other than the much pointed out fire-risk, this seems like an awful idea to me purely from a smoke point of view - it doesn't take long to fill a room with BBQ smoke and fat residue - it takes much longer to get it out!
i'd just go with a small tabletop grill, like the Weber q100, and DIY a stand/hanger
Check first if you're allowed to: In my building I cannot have a grill on the deck.

You guys are such wimps, a barbecue is commonplace on a balcony! If secured properly this is no more dangerous than the normal kind. One, two, better not sue!
