Q: I'm looking for a good cargo style bike to carry my two children. I've seen a lot of people in New York riding kids on the XtraCycle Radish or on Surly bikes with XtraCycle additions. I've also seen the Trek Transport, which looks great too, but they say it's not for children.
What's the best bike like these out there? Which handles the best?

I think this is the cuties thing in the world of bikes!!! not sure how city practical it is as it seems more lazy day in the park type but its adorable.
I've heard really good things about Madsen Bikes as well, but if you're willing to shell out the dough a Dutch Bafkiet can't be beat.

I have a Yuba Mundo (yubaride.com) that I absolutely love -- it's cheaper than a Surly Big Dummy, but a lot more stable and able to carry weight than an Xtracycle conversion (which has an Xtracycle bolted onto a regular bike frame). The Yuba Mundo genuinely feels like a regular bike and I pass other cyclists regularly, even when carrying a toddler and lots of cargo. Bakfiests seem rad, but they're definitely more suited to flat cities as well as being pretty pricey.
I would recommend checking out totcycle.com for a great range of recommendations/reviews from an enthusiastic cyclist Dad. I also love Joe Bike's post on how to choose a cargo bike: http://www.joe-bike.com/cargo-bikes/which-one-is-best-for-you/
Not really a cargo bike, but a cool concept:

I like it because the carrier is in the front of the bike so you can see your kids and talk to them, too. The front wheel comes of the bike and attaches to the carrier. Bike and carrier can also be used separately.
I just went through this! I tried everything out there and decided on a Madsen, and we mostly love it. I think that it depends on the age of your kids, how much and how far you plan on riding, if you are going to use it carrying things other than kids.
Like I said, I test rode several WITH kids on them, and I just did not feel comfortable with the xtracycle- Yuba setup. I know many people love it, but I didn't. I rode the Madsen and loved it right away, so I think it is all your preference. I would not buy any of them without a test ride.
One other cool thing about the Madsen (Yuba too) is that they are one size, so my husband and I can easily share the bike.
I admit I don't have a suggestion. I just wanted to say thank you for being responsible by riding a bike.
Please check out www.doubledutchbikes.com as an alternative to other child carriers out there, and take advantage of our spring sale event, wile you get a chance also check out our new 2013 model which comes with an aluminium frame and a fibre glass box, hands done the lightest cargo bicycle on the market making it user friendly to all riders.
We have a xtracycle and LOVE it! I would highly recommend getting one. Since we knew our kids would not be small forever and knew we would want to get our bike back after they outgrew it we just got the extender kit and had it added onto a bike that we really like. Once we are done with it we can just sell the extender (but truth be told we will probably keep it because it is also great for groceries). Getting the xtracycle has kept us from needing to get a second car.
Depends on the size of your kids, but I think this would make a fantastic kid transport. There's two trailer like seats in the front of the bike. I test rode one (I don't have children myself) at a bike fest and it really handled very well, and a mom I know with one loves it.

I love Workcycles!!! They weigh a ton, and are expensive but totally solid. They have them at adeline adeline if you are in NYC. http://www.workcycles.com/
I've seen a tandem with a lower kid seat in front and the steering and brakes linked to the rear so that the kid is in sight, once they are too big for the trailer/cargo box. This was at Paul's Bicycle Way of Life tho it is not on their web site.
My neighbor has a baby seat holder custom made for the front of her bike, and once again the kid is in sight. She actually carried her heavy almost-3-yr-old in it up and down hills. It has a rain/weather cover and the kid sleeps all the way to town in it.
Definitely look into a Bakfiets. The Dutch really have figured out the comfiest way to cart kids around in/on bikes.
The Danish seem to love the Christiania Bikes. They appear to be quite the status symbol. Very popular (also very pricey) among the young parents in Copenhagen.

Had 2 moms with 2 kids per bike ride in on Yuba Mundos last week to my shop. Another with a kiddo in a trailer. Not a parent, but those (Mundos) seem really convenient & multifunctional, even if you don't have kids, or they've outgrown the setup.
As the above commenter said - the Dutch have this figured out! I am Anglo-American and have lived in the Netherlands for seven years. I have three children (9,7 and 4 years) and bought this bike three years ago: http://bakfiets.nl/eng/modellen/cargobike/long/. I ride it everywhere - it is the most stable bike I have ever ridden, it has seven gears and doesn't seem heavy to ride at all. I use it for all my shopping and have had up to five kids on it at once. I can't praise it enough - totally worth the money. I use it every day - with and without kids (the two oldest ride their own bikes these days).
I have been using a Chariot trailer with my 4 yr old the last 3 years. I commute regularly and it is sturdy, safe and hauls him and plenty more. Plus it converts to a stroller and pull behind for skis.
We have a Babboe City (a bakfiets) and we love it! I ride my 3 kids (ages 4, 2, and six months) all over the place. The raincover keeps them warm and dry, and they love the ride. In some cases it's faster than taking the car, because of traffic! It is a bit heavy going up hills (with 75 pounds of kids in it) but my glutes have never looked better :)
I have a Yuba mundo with electric assist. There is room for a baby bike seat on the back and one or sometimes two kids ride between the baby seat and my seat. I need to take pictures...
I highly reccommend icargobike! They have every cargo bike available, or almost. I purchased a Yuba from their store online, and am not dissappointed. Richard reallllly knows a lot about cargo bikes, and electric bikes. He answered all my questions and then some. Also, I got a really great deal with all the kid carriers, and shipping too through amtrak. http://www.icargobike.com
I'm Dutch; the BAKFIETS!!
I've been riding ZIGO in city for three years with my now 5 year old and 3 year old. And I absolutely love it. It is nice to be able to see and chat with the kids in front and share the view. It has three wheels so it's stable and don't have to touch the ground while you wait for the light to turn. You can separate the bike from the double stroller and they are very good individually. My 5 year old is about to grow out of it but I will definitely keep it for grocery shopping.
I love my Bakfiets! Slightly more pricey but so worth it. I can fit up to four kids plus shopping in my longer version and it still feels like a normal bike. Great resale value also for when my kids get older, although I can't imagine ever giving it up. I can handle the hills pretty well in it too.
Are you in a small space? I highly recommend the civia halsted, www.civiacycles.con we have ours outfitted with a yepp mini. It isn't a big bike but holds a ton. I use ours daily.
We blog about our cargo adventures with it: bikemamadelphia.blogspot.com
As an American expat living in Copenhagen, these bikes are the BEST!!!!

some of these look soooo precarious to me!
I HIGHLY recommend the bakfiets, which several other folks have mentioned. They come with a hefty price tag, but they are totally the safest way to schlep around kids on a bike. They're practically impossible to tip over, super sturdy, have the advantage that you can see your kids in front of you and know they're all right, and you can use the rain cover to keep your kids warm and dry. My brother's carless family uses their bakfiets in conjunction with a couple of portable foldable bikes to safely and easily get everyone where they need to go (that way dad can drop the kids off, and mom can pick them up). I've been both rider and passenger, and I'm a huge fan.
They have one of the bakfiets.nl bikes, bought locally through CleverCycle in Portland, Oregon.
check out www.doubledutchbikes.com, currently running a summer sale for $1399
We have a taga bike and love it. It has different attachments to carry either two seats, an infant car seat, a wooden carriage type box, that I plan to upgrade to when we have more childen, and a few other options. There are also seatbelts in it for added safety and has shimano gears.

Hi James,
I was also looking for some cargo bike, but electric if possible...
I found couple of cargo bikes which are perfect for city commuting.
http://www.bikeeurope.org/2012/10/cargo-bikes-in-europe-facts/
I thing a 500 watt electric bike with a battery for 20 km ride is a perfect solution for spring, summer and autumn in the city. Even on the cold winter day bikes are usefull if the streets are clean.
I am selling my Nihola Family on Ebay now. Please refer anyone in North America who might want one. Thanks!
