Hey, I'm actually ahead of the trend for once. I bought the snail lamp at Urban Outfitters a couple of months ago for our future nursery. My only complaint is that the electrical cord runs through the spiral side--which I think is the more attractive side--of the shell.

I had bought the snail lampbase from Urban Outfitters and to my surprise when I came home with it and read the small sticker tag attached to the wire, I read a warning involving the lamp itself containing lead. It stated that pregnant women should not handle the lamp due to possible birth defects and that one must wash their hands after handling it. Needless to say, I would not recommend this particular lamp for any nursery. I returned it the next day.

Woodland - I think there is a law in CA that requires all pottery made there? or sold there? or imported there? have that lead sticker affixed to it. I'm not really sure of the particulars but even mugs have the sticker. Maybe someone who knows more can illuminate (pun intended) the subject.

I just checked my lamp, which is still in the bag I bought it in, and no warning sticker. That is really upsetting...I would have never known. grrrrr

I love the snail lamp, but my husband, sister and friends all hate it. Oh well!

you could try the uber-creepy Baby Lamp from Petitcollin; there are a number of ceramic lamps from Jonathan Adler, also.
