Name: Whitney
Location: West Hollywood, California
I've lived in my apartment for a little over 13 months now and I fall in love with it more each day. I call it my own little "French Bungalow." I manage a high-end Mid Century Modern furniture gallery called Orange and I LOVE french 50's design. I'm 27 and had always lived with roommates, but finally I knew it was my time to have my own space to express my vision and live in my dream world. My 1 bedroom, 750 square foot, 2nd floor apartment is in West Hollywood nestled amongst dozens of over grown palms and eucalyptus trees.
Empty, the dark ebony hard wood floors and white walls with high ceilings and crown molding seemed like the perfect canvas. Although small, and without any real place for a kitchen table, I knew it was the right space for me. With all of the windows open, all I could see were giant leaves and trees inches from my window....you would never know you were in the midst of the busy city life.
My main inspiration that I drool over and am anticipating the day I can actually visit someday, is a small boutique hotel in St. Barthes - called Hotel La Banane. The website alone gives me butterflies. The song "Love is In the Air" by John Paul Young plays in the back ground while you navigate through the en-captivating images of the chic-mod life that was the 70's. Bright patterned tunics, big sun glasses, tan bodies, and drinks by the pool epitomize the glorious 1970's lifestyle. But amongst the beautiful people are of course beautiful pieces of furniture. The hotel features the very best French designers of the 1950's - Serge Moullie, Pierre Jeanneret, Charlotte Perriand, Juliette Durrel, and Jean Prouve. My mouth is watering just thinking about it.
While I began to design my apartment, I had to come back down to earth a bit and come to terms that I couldn't venture out to not only be able to find but also afford all of these great vintage pieces. Working in the business I do, I have a trained eye on the style of certain pieces, the lines, the finish, the proportion; and I knew this would come in handy and help me track down more affordable and obtainable pieces while still giving me my 50's caribbean vibe.

I love it and Ive only looked at one pic! Reminds me of my home.
Congrats on living in such a lovely, light and airy space! I especially love your coffee table and living room chandelier. And, the bedroom is adorable!
This is a beautiful space. I really like the gallery wall. Everything looks really neat and organized.
So lovely. Great job...and I like the simple yet stylish and thoughtful decor. Not over-done with little chatkis like you see in so many period inspired homes.
Beautiful! Source for that ceiling pendant?
I'm Jealous!
Too CUTE!!!!!
Loving it!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
you're lucky with the corner windows in your living-and bedroom.
You've done an admirable job on the space. It appears that in pulling this home together you exercised considerable restraint and careful editing resulting in a clean crisp design. Bravo. I must say however, that I do not see the "French" influence in this design. I'm not sure I see any mid century either and while I'm at it I might as well add that I'm not really seeing anything that resonates as being 50's Caribbean. Perhaps I am missing something.
Anyone have a source for the media console? I'm looking for something that size with a mid-century vibe.
gorgeous!
ooh- the wine rack. i covet, i covet bad.
Beautiful! Everything is obviously well thought out and special. Lovely work!
I agree with diny, "light and airy" were the first adjectives to come to mind. Lovely space!
Great windows. I get a fresh and airy feeling just from looking at the photos.
Also love the kitchen floor tile.
Lovely home. Could you fill us in on the great mirror in the bedroom.
Where did you get the coffee table? I love it!
Beautiful place! I was wondering where did you buy the coffee table?
One of the main reasons I purchased my condo was also for the view. I didn't want to have a home so close by that I could see a neighbor passing by in their undies...
You've done a beautiful job Whitney but I don't see much of the influences you speak of but I'm not as experienced as you are being that you work in a gallery. But I did live through the 70's! Disco Fever!! :o)
Seriously, nice job indeed.
I love the simple lines of unadorned windows. But...how do you deal with privacy issues?
so beautiful...I'm envious
nice, very nice..
What a cute place! I love the dining space you made in the kitchen. The writing was really well done, too.
Love the space, I'm also curious what the source of the media console is.
ME TOO! where is it from? would love to know!!!
(in response to wine rack)
Sexy space, Whitney! The wine rack, of course, is a Paul McCobb design.
Sweet space! You are lucky to have such great light coming in too!
Wonderful, I like it!!!!
Soooo about that media console...
Gorgeous apartment but the thing I love most about this post is your new word "en-captivating".
love it! Feels so stress free. :)
Very nice. The way it's hung, the mirror looks like a giant hand mirror. Looks good.
Console is from West Elm!
I want that black and white print in the bedroom! Who is it from? And, oh...that bedroom is just to die for! Love it!
I like the plia chairs+ikea norbo table, too! XD Actually, I think I saw that combo pretty recently in a craigslist ad (NYC). o.O I didn't know the chairs came in a colored frame+clear lucite option, huh....
(I just acquired a set of 4 (from a different craigslist ad XD) and am kind of curious about the cost of re-chroming (probably exorbitant given my budget) and if there are color options beyond plain and black....)
love! house tour please!
Whitney, where is your 'kitchen table' from? I have an incredibly small space for a dining surface and chairs in my kitchen, and your solution might be just what I'm looking for.
It's the norbo in black-brown. Ikea has a couple other wall-mounted drop-leaf tables that are all pretty similar.
