Whitney's Bungalow in West Hollywood

House Call

Name: Whitney
Location: West Hollywood, California

I've lived in my apartment for a little over 13 months now and I fall in love with it more each day. I call it my own little "French Bungalow." I manage a high-end Mid Century Modern furniture gallery called Orange and I LOVE french 50's design. I'm 27 and had always lived with roommates, but finally I knew it was my time to have my own space to express my vision and live in my dream world. My 1 bedroom, 750 square foot, 2nd floor apartment is in West Hollywood nestled amongst dozens of over grown palms and eucalyptus trees.

Empty, the dark ebony hard wood floors and white walls with high ceilings and crown molding seemed like the perfect canvas. Although small, and without any real place for a kitchen table, I knew it was the right space for me. With all of the windows open, all I could see were giant leaves and trees inches from my window....you would never know you were in the midst of the busy city life.

My main inspiration that I drool over and am anticipating the day I can actually visit someday, is a small boutique hotel in St. Barthes - called Hotel La Banane. The website alone gives me butterflies. The song "Love is In the Air" by John Paul Young plays in the back ground while you navigate through the en-captivating images of the chic-mod life that was the 70's. Bright patterned tunics, big sun glasses, tan bodies, and drinks by the pool epitomize the glorious 1970's lifestyle. But amongst the beautiful people are of course beautiful pieces of furniture. The hotel features the very best French designers of the 1950's - Serge Moullie, Pierre Jeanneret, Charlotte Perriand, Juliette Durrel, and Jean Prouve. My mouth is watering just thinking about it.

While I began to design my apartment, I had to come back down to earth a bit and come to terms that I couldn't venture out to not only be able to find but also afford all of these great vintage pieces. Working in the business I do, I have a trained eye on the style of certain pieces, the lines, the finish, the proportion; and I knew this would come in handy and help me track down more affordable and obtainable pieces while still giving me my 50's caribbean vibe.
