Q: I recently acquired a Satsuma Moriage vase which was converted into a lamp. I don't know much about it — someone put it out for free when clearing out a house. There are three people depicted on the vase — two nearly identical-looking bald, old men and one who could be a female (or a younger male with long hair) riding a dragon in the sea. Can anyone tell me about who might be depicted on the vase?

Shame they converted it into a lamp :( I'm no expert on Japanese mythology, but I know a bit to make an educated guess.
The sea dragon is most likely Ryūjin. It's said that he controls the tides with magical tide jewels. He had a daughter named Otohime, who could possibly be the one depicted riding him. The two men I can't identify. Though, perhaps it's Otohime's husband, Hoori and his brother?
The woman may be Empress Jingū and the men being her husband and son. The Empress is said to had help from the tide jewels conquer Korea with a flood. Her son was born following her return to Japan.
