Rapidly-growing rattan includes hundreds of vine-like palms found mostly in Indonesia, and wicker is woven from rattan, water hyacinth, reeds, or other natural or synthetic materials.
In your home, wicker and rattan can add a vintage vibe that balances out more formal parts of a room — such as how the hanging chair contrasts with the white tufted sofa and antique mirror in the first image. I also love how it looks on chairs with dark metal legs (Image 5).

i love use of rattan and cane, however, it is difficult to dust and clean.
On a very doable scale, I substituted a rattan chair from ikea (the linus chair) for my old desk chair in my office, which has a glossy white desk and shelves, and I was really surprised at how instantly pleasing it was. Baby steps towards understanding texture!
Very pretty, but not very durable or low-maintenance. Rattan is being replaced by rather ugly synthetic approximations as its jungle habitat is lost. If you have the real thing then you may want to coddle it as it's probably increasingly valuable.

Maui's got way too much rattan and wicker, I'm sick of it. The whole beach condo look with the floral print cushions. Not comfortable either. Now, if we have more variety, it's not so bad, this wicker hanging chaire mixed with more modern decor really works.
Number 2 just doesn't seem like a comfortable place to sit... If I sat in one of those chairs, I'd feel like the table was trying to eat me.
I recently found a gem of a wicker chair on craigslist and do not regret it one bit.

Wicker is so versatile, comes in many different colors and the look can be changed simply by adding different cushions and pillows.
