Personally, we think germ-phobia has gotten out of hand. People seem to be becoming more ill, not less, despite all these anti-bacterial products (which we highly DO NOT recommend using, since they're creating super dooper antibiotic-resistant strains with every wash). There's also plenty of good germs out there you don't want to eliminate. But in regards to mold and dust mites, we're kind of liking the idea of using this Germ Eliminating Wand of disinfecting justice on our bedding. Or it could just be because we like the idea of waving it around like a Jedi knight. [via Red Ferret].

It looks like a UV light which we use in the lab to denature DNA...you would need to hold it in position for a minimum of 15 minutes to zap anything i would think. Plus you need to protect your eyes as well, so bring along your UV goggles!

I am Ashleigh McHenry and I work for Halo...the company that makes Halo Ultraviolet Vacuums. Believe it or not, wands like this, and our vacuums are designed to work under a second to kill dust mites, viruses, bacteria, you name it...in your carpeting and beds. labchick is absolutely right however about it "deactivating" the DNA of these micro-organisms.
The nice thing about our vacs (not to toot anyone's horn...I don't get paid a penny anyways) is that when it's on the bottom of the vacuum, we have actually set in place MULTIPLE safety switches to prevent users from exposing themselves to the UV light. whatever little bit that might glow out from the edges of the powerhead is just like being in the presence of sunlight...it won't damage your eyes or skin. It's just like sunlight...if you stare into it...or lay out for 8 hours everyday, of course, there will be damage done. But with the design of the bulb chamber, you don't need to vacuum for any longer than normal...the reflectivity of the bulb chamber creates the exact irradiance to kill these creepy-crawlies on contact.
