The owner of Erich Ginder Studio tipped us off to his latest creation, the Wilderness Lamp. The lamp has a cast resin base in the form of a caribou hoof.
We like the monochromatic black of the base and stained cherry veneer shade. It's also available in white but the black sets up a great dark wilderness vibe. -regina

The hooves are creepy ... I don't like it. It's like the lamp is about to come to life or something and walk around my living room ...
Good God, that's awful. What do they call it, "Silence of the Caribou"?
"Do you still wake up at night?... Wake up in the dark and hear the screaming of the lambs?"
take it easy kids it made out of resin, it can't hurt you. what do you think of antique mahogany furniture with claw and ball feet,
what can hurt is the $1024.00 price tag.
That lamp is gruesome. As a wildlife conservationist, "realistic" animal-part furniture bothers me. It's not the same as a part that an animal might lose naturally, such as an antler.
And as far as design goes, resin molded stuff bothers me too. Something tacky about that.
At least with the antique tables, etc. the feet are on the floor ... not right next to my head when I'm reading a book ...
It makes me think of something Delia (Winona Ryder's Mom) from "Beetlejuice" would have had in her living room. And not in a good way.
So you think all the antler furniture and accessories are made from antlers that were shed naturally? Ha.
I love it!
This lamp scares me.
I suspect that if Philppe Starck had designed this, everyone would be "Ga-Ga" about how clever and ironic it was.
Elliot, what mid-west mall are you from? If anything, AT New York would indulge in the opposite--we like nothing more than countering the obsequious masses who flock, lemming-like, to every designer-stamped product, with pointed critiques of the most venerated hands. And Starck? Good God, he's like the Starbucks of design. At least propose someone with a shred of cred.
Creepy. Admittedly, I'm not as design savvy as the rest of you... but it is not aesthetically pleasing to me at all. Almost seems like a joke...
Rascal--
Um, you don't speak for ALL of AT on this topic. I thought elliot had a point.
And when you DON'T agree with someone, why do you have to make a slam implying the person is less tasteful or less cosmopolitan than you? That was kinda nasty.
And I think Karim Rashid has supplanted Starck for epic over-exposure, btw. So maybe *you* should check your cred!!! Or at least update the reference ;) But I think elliot's choice of reference was pretty dead-on, since Starck's M.O. has often been to (re)design with odd irony (his gnome tables come to mind).
BTW, I like this, in the right environment. But I'm a sucker of late for any lamp with a woodgrain shade. Or anything whose color could be described as "graphite."
patrick (too) -- I take your point, no need for personal attacks, but I felt a bit of a slam from elliot, so I guess I reacted. I just think it's way off to suggest that on a board like this, where folks are really focused on the work, that there would be a lemming-like component based more on the designer than the design. I suspect most here--especially those who comment regularly--would take issue with that.
Otherwise, you know I need to be a bit dramatic in my prose, it does liven things up around here ;)
reminds me of moooi's new HORSE LAMP i saw on the karkula website ... which is definitely more fun than creepy.
*Rascal* No offense taken. I was reacting to the criticism of the comments and felt that better known designers with big P.R. budgets like Starck/Rashid, would have a much easier time having a design like this accepted and admired.
I personally like the design- It's well proportioned, nicely finished and- as it turns out- quite a conversation piece.
i almost like this. i think if it was long and skinny i would like it more. but the short and chubby doesnt do it for me. is the inside of the shade printed with forest trees? or is it just plain white? make it tall and skinny, put a cool tree pattern in yellow or forrest green inside the shade maybe add a little squirrel for a pull cord and be done.
This is an obvious rip-off of HR Geiger's
3-Penis Lamp from 1972...give me a break
I think it looks more like a modernized version of a lamp typically made by taxidermists.
