My latest obsession is the pale pink sofa. These photos show why. But a new sofa is such a big investment that I fear I'll be sick of it in less than a year. What do you think about pink for a major seating buy? Yay or no way?

Bemz to the rescue! Their textured cotton in Rose is especially nice: http://www.bemz.com/en-us/textiles/
Ahh...I've been lusting after that pink-silk-with fringe sofa featured on Downton Abbey!
Let's see... How long have you loved pink? Have you tried less expensive but large-sized doses of pink - a bedspread, sofa-cover or wall? Do the majority of your other home furnishing investments complement this sofa? Do you like the way the fabric feels under your hand & legs? Do you have pets with dark fur? The pictures show mostly summery rooms - how would it fit into a winter room, with heavy rugs & furry fabrics & darker tones?
And - are you inclined to brief affairs with the unusual, then regret your involvement later? Or do you make a commitment to the weird and glory in it for life?
Obsessions rarely last long. Listen to your second thoughts voice and avoid the pink. A big ticket item like a sofa will have to stick with you for years. Get a neutral sofa and accent it with pink pillows or throws.
What about dyeing a slipcover pink?
I'd consider buying one used on craigslist, but I don't think I could spend a few thousand (or even a thousand) on a pink sofa even if I loved it right now. I just don't see how it will last.
Hmmm...How much do you love pink exactly? If the answer is A LOT then, you might be fine. If not, you might want to get a pink throw or some pillows. I've found (as mentioned above) that I tend to temporarily obsess over something and then realize later that I'm glad I waited before making an impulse buy.
If you *really* love the sofa, you probably won’t get sick of it. Objects I’ve just LOVED… (even irrationally) tend to keep their charm. At least for me.

Those are great suggestions to get a neutral colour and accent with pink pillows/throws! Or even a slipcover. I must admit my first thought was that pale pink can show dirt very easily and unlike white cotton slipcovers, can't be bleached out.
Since I hate pink, I vote no on a pink sofa. Use pink as an accent color and if you get sick of it, it won't be so expensive to change. You can get lots of pink in a room with paint, throw pillows, rugs, curtains etc. You'd be better served with an expensive sofa in a neutral color (black, white, gray, brown).
love the look in pictures and pastels are so now, but nope. there are other ways to add pink (which i love too). a gallon of paint is much cheaper.
i made the mistake of falling in love with a primitive pink slant top desk at brimfield 10 years ago. had to have it. love it still, but it's been challenging over all these years.
One word: slipcover.
Not a hard one. Buy an inexpensive Ikea sofa like a Hovas. Slipcovers are $49/set. Buy some Rit Dye and dye one set pink. Voile! No regrets.
Go pink! Life is too short to not take risks and too short to have regrets. I had a vintage pink sofa for years and I LOVED it. Even when pink was not in style or my favorite color.
I was also going to say absolutely never. But then.... that 3rd photo is rad! I guess it depends on your budget. If you don't mind changing your sofa out in 2 years, go for it. If you do, I 2nd the earlier suggestions to go neutral w pink accents.
I have a vintage teal velvet sofa I picked up over 5 years ago and I still love it to this day! It wasn't something I had seen trending and caught my eye, but a specific piece I saw in the antique shop and I immediately fell in love with. I debated with myself for a couple months as to whether or not I should get it, but couldn't stop thinking about it. Miraculously it was still there when I went back AND the store was closing so they even had a 20% discount. Now the upholstery was never in top shape, and 4 moves have not been terribly kind to it, but I'm determined to keep the vibrant teal color when I get it reupholstered (although I'm hoping to find a nice looking alternative to velvet...).
Whether or not a piece like this would for someone is a matter of individual personality. If this is a color you frequently work and have been thinking about it for a while, I'd say go for it! Just make sure you think it through and don't make a snap decision based on what you see popular with other people.
Do you really like photo #5? That room is a little scary imo.
I certainly would, but I'm not you. Slipcovers are a great option.
If I were buying something like a Pottery Barn or Crate and Barrel sofa where you can buy multiple slipcovers for regular washing, a pink option isn't necessarily bad (but for a sofa like that, I'd budget for 2 slipcovers right away, and an extra in 3-5 years). If you're buying a sofa where you can't wash the fabric regularly, and pink is not an integral part of your personal style... no way. Since my sister has been a pink girl for almost our entire lives, I'd tell her to get a pink sofa in a heartbeat. If I were thinking of a pink sofa, she'd make me go get my head examined, even if it was a slipcover, because I destroy pink things and love red and aqua ones.
Really, the same goes for any other "unusual" color choice.
I think I would do something less costly/permanent - slipcover, paint, curtains, pillows, throw. Some of those sofas are lovely, but the very fact that you're asking this question leads me to believe that the answer is probably "yes, you will regret it."
It all depends on the shade of pink, and how much you like that general color spectrum.
It also depends on the fabric, too, I can see a vintage sofa rocking that pink/gray/black rough weave fabric that was so common back in the day, Boucle, I think it is.
There is Pepto Bismol pink, and there is Rose, it all depends on which shade of pink, the room, what you have to go with it etc along with you much you actually like pink in general will determine if it's right for you and don't worry about trends, they are fleeting and never meant to last.
Neutral furniture is "safe" and predictable -- live large, you only go around once! A sofa is easy enough to replace if it doesn't work out, or you could always get a slip cover. Dare greatly!
Listen to T.S. Eliot...
I grow old … I grow old …
I shall wear the bottoms of my trousers rolled.
Shall I part my hair behind? Do I dare to eat a peach?
p.s. My sofa is bright red.
YAY
I regret my tobacco leaf brown sofa. I wish I had gotten aqua, marigold or pink. Big regret!
Go for it!! My favourite sofa ever was a deep wine colour which everyone said I would hate in 2 years. Kept that sofa for almost 20 years!
Pink seems like one of those colors that only works at certain times in your life (e.g. when you get your first college studio/apartment or when you're a funky 60-year-old granny) or for certain people (e.g. women who plan to stay single forever, women with whipped husbands, wealthy people who can afford to experiment and do pink right, etc.). Are you in one of those places and/or one of those people? If so, go pink! If not, wait a while and see if the fancy passes.
..."women who plan to stay single forever, women with whipped husbands"...
Err, sexist much?
yes
I think if your feelin' the pink sofa you should get it! Pink goes with everything - everything goes with everything - you only go around once - why play it so safe? I get tired of all the charcoal, beige, greige...
the pink sofas in #1 and #3 are adorable, and versatile enough that they can evolve into different looks as you do. go for it!
"wealthy people who can afford to experiment and do pink right"...
Seriously?
Several years ago I bought a red one, and although it still looks great, I am a little sick of it. I would much prefer to have a neutral sofa with colorful accents instead. I generally love lots of color, but I guess I just grew tired of such a big dose of red. If I can ever afford a new one, it will be neutral. BUT, if I found a colorful yet inexpensive 2nd hand sofa, I wouldn't hesitate to buy it.
You can play up or downplay pale pink with the other colors and textures in the room. It isn't as though the sofa is hot pink or hot orange. So I say go for it.
Never would I. I like to change things up too much. On the other hand, I am envious of people who have the guts to go for it. For me, a sofa is an investment and way too much trouble to change as often as my need for change.
The 3rd pic is going to give me nightmares...reminds me of the rose of the 80's which was erroneously labeled mauve. I may never recover that phase. It's precisely why I ignore 'trends' today.
Have fun & post pics.

Go for it! Unless you dogs... with black fur that shed!
Don't do it, reconsider. I'm three years into a sofa and am kicking myself for not going the route of a neutral gray or beige. The color of your sofa sets the tone of the room and I'm stuck in one because of the color I chose. I would get accent pillows or a slip cover. If you can afford it go for it but if you have doubts go for a pink accent chair.
i say go for it! but i'd be very picky about finding the right shade of pink. maybe don't even call it pink, but rather search for "dusty rose" or "mauve"? mauve can be just as much of a neutral color i think. and you can always go the opposite way and accent(or tone down) your pink couch with black white or gray pillows/throws.
For things like sofas, if you have to ask then you will regret it. If you love it so much, you don't even care to think about how rational it is, you will never regret it. In my experience, I tend to over think everything and consider every possible scenario. However, when I fall in love with something (designer bag/shoe or table or print etc) I don't question it at all. And if someone else points out that its not neutral or safe investment piece, I love it so much I don't care. :)
Enough already with the accent pillows + neutral sofa combo! I say go for it, the fact that you're even considering it makes me think that you are willing to push yourself design wise, so why not just go there? Taking that design risk is often what takes a room from being ordinary to awesome. You can always slipcover w/ a neutral tone later if you regret it :)
I like it a lot when it's in an eclectic setting. Not so much in the formal settings. In photo number 2,3 &4 it looks like the new neutral. Love the way the wood and antiques plays in with the brown undertones of the sofa in 2. Really like it in three as well. By the time we get to photo five, I'm like "too much" with the cherry blossoms. I like one, but not a fan of pink and white. Like it a lot with the brown. Wouldn't it look gorgeous with oak flooring?
It's hard to say without knowing what you're pairing it with.
The only thing I'd be sick of is another damn brown sofa.
I feel "haunted" by these pink sofas. An hour later I'm still thinking about them. Insane for pic #3. My first thoughts also began with the easy dirt factor. Then I too thought of a perpetual single girl, not a bad thing for sure. Such great and thoughtful idea comments. I find the light pink a neutral somehow.
p.s. Bring a big swatch of that fabric home, tape it to the wall, and live with it a month before you make the commitment. I can't tell you how many times I thought a color would be great until I actually lived with it a while.
And let us know how it goes!
Yes!! If you love it now, you'll love it later. "If you have to ask..." you might just not have confidence in your enthusiam. Be bold! Slipcovers can solve anything, but oh my goodness! How lucious!
I fell in love with an 8 ft camelback sofa with rolled arms and 6 plump pillows...with BIG flowers. I still love it. (thos it's sometimes embarrasing to admit)
I haven't regretted my lime-green sofa! Green is my favourite colour and while I was loooking for a new sofa, everybody said "buy a neutral and use a green throw and green pillows", but it wouldn't be the same....I wanted a green sofa! If you already have pink in your life (clothes, things in your home etc) and know that it works for you, then you already know if you regret it or not.
Go for it! You can always use it as a neutral- think how beautiful it would be with chocolate browns, or how refreshing with greens. How fresh with white and purples. The possibilities are endless. And I can live vicariously through you because I am married to a man that would rather die than have a pink sofa. Lucky girl, do you really think you'd regret it?
I got a red one that I eventually came to hate, but that's mostly because the shape and size and style were all wrong. But I think the pink sofa could be great.
But if budget is a concern, I think you could get a look similar to picture #1 if you go for something like an IKEA Karlstad and change the legs (like here http://www.apartmenttherapy.com/before-after-adding-mid-c-styl-138736), then put on a pink slipcover. I don't know if the white Karlstad slipcover is dyable, but it looks like there are a bunch of people selling custom IKEA slipcovers on the Internet.
Go for it- be bold or stay save with a neutral slipcover option but stay pink! Pale pink can shout out or be a kind of neutral depending on the rest of a color scheme, so you still have several options with a pale pink sofa. Pink can look very mature and sober or sassy or fun- it's up to you!
I have owned a Wysteria (heathery lavendar) sofa (http://images.crateandbarrel.com/is/image/Crate/AzureSofaWysteriaS11?$lg$) for almost a year now.
I LOVE it and still do. You can make any color a neutral if you want. Plus if I got tired of it you could tone it down by draping a blanket over the back and adding pillows.
I am so happy I bought this sofa for the design, not specifically for the color. I had been in love with it for years. Originally I was going to get it in a light blue, but when they discontinued it I happened to snag the floor model in Wysteria for about $700 less than the original price!
If you are not sure about committing to a pink sofa, how about a pink chair?
Pink is a contentious color, people will either love it or hate it. Personally, I can't stand pink, but I love a brightly colored sofa - a friend of mine had an orange sofa for a long time and how I coveted that one!
Never. LOVE it!!
I say go for it. If you get tired of pink, the sofa looks like it has some nice lines that lend itself to a nice tailored slipcover so you can change the color down the road. I also like the Craigslist idea - so many great finds there at a fraction of the cost.
I like furniture that has nice lines because I can always recover it in a few years - but if I tire of the style I can't remake it quite so easily.
I Love pink sofas! Go for it! You will not be sorry!!!
Go for it. A sofa, while a costly investment, is the focal point of a room and shouldn't just blend in with its surroundings. I have a light green couch! It's awesome and works with everything I have. Pink will be fine. And if you hate it in three years, put a slipcover on it.
I think if you've always loved pink then it will work. If it's a passing phase, maybe not. Do you already decorate with pink or find yourself drawn to pinks in stores? If so, I don't think you'll get sick of it. Ever since I found this picture, I love the idea of a pink sofa, but then I've always liked pinks: http://theuptownbride.blogspot.com/2012/03/fashionably-feminine-rooms.html
When I was younger I would have said go practical and safe. Leave the more daring and adventurous decisions to things you can change really easily. However, having lived so many lessons I now will say if you love it - go for it. You may not get the chance again for a very long time.
Having said that there are a couple of things to consider: don't just fall in love with the color, you have to find the right sofa to wear it. It has to be something that will be comfortable for you, and fit your sitting style. Are you a loungers, more upright book reader, recliner? Are the arms comfortable, does it support your head.
Then you have to make sure you get the right pink. Paler pinks can be almost a neutral in a room, and you can put throws and pillows on to change the look. But if you go for for Pepto Bismal pink you really will have a color that draws attention to itself.
I think pink is too much derided. Too many associations with Barbie and other too girly things. It really is a warm and comforting color, and can be seen in so many places around the world - I think of India and European stately homes. Go with your instinct and don't second guess yourself!
OK, my first response was YUK! No way! Blech! And that stayed true for all the sofas except #3 from decor8. Maybe because it is a salmony/peachy/coral pink, less pepto pale pink. Pink is really not my thing. I've always been a blue girl. I think you really have to love pink to buy a pink sofa.
If you do buy pink, it is better, I think, if there are only a handful of pink options so you don't regret or question your decision later. Picking from 50 different pinks would produce a heavy case of pink regret.
Do what you love.
Here's a good argument for a pink sofa:
http://www.nytimes.com/slideshow/2012/10/11/greathomesanddestinations/20121011-LOCATION.html#2
Oops, slide 7 in the NYTimes piece is a better shot of the sofa:
http://www.nytimes.com/slideshow/2012/10/11/greathomesanddestinations/20121011-LOCATION.html#7
You should only buy something controversial 1) if you have heaps of money 2) it expresses the real you.ie. you are a shabby chic person, you've always done bold statements, etc.
More important than the colour is whether the size and design of the sofa fit harmoniously with its surroundings. Pink is surprisingly versatile; it goes well with neutrals, brown, navy, even with red and orange.
Clearly, the pink sofa in the photo, above, works because everything else in the room is white. So if, before you buy the pink sofa, you're willing to get rid of all non-white items in the room, you'll be fine. I think the principle works with any bright-colored or print sofa; if everything else is white, the item will be fine.
In my living room, I have a red print rug with some green in it, green walls that match the green in the rug, and a white sofa, so it's the same principle, only in reverse (still white against color).
Just put things this way: is it a trend? Or have you always loved that kind of thing? I always find that shape, and not color is the most real thing you can love. I'd tell you to get it in a heartbeat if you said you loved the style and the shape...
While not a fan of pink anything, I say go for what speaks to your heart and makes you happy. Slipcovers for a temporary or permanent solution are an option should you tire of the color. Slide 3 is pink more modern imo. Slide 4 more country-style imo. The NYT link (thanks for that GreenHeronFarm) shows more euro-style imo.
But think of this scenario...in two years from now, you have a totally rotten day. When you get home and open your door, will your couch seem like an oasis? Just a suggestion and something to think about should you choose to do so.
Best of luck and happiness with your decision,
I've had a vintage sofa re-upholstered in hot pink velvet about 5 years ago, and I still love it!! Everything else in my living room is neutral. Same thing in my kitchen - neutral, save for the pink fridge!! They make me happy.
Pearmelon -- I think you are right about how versatile the color is. I have a challenging house and I've been thinking about how to unify what's already in place, i.e. a flagstone floor stained deep red-brown fig, slightly orange tinted wood ceilings and floors in the bedroom, etc. Right now the walls are bright white and that contrast only makes the flagstone floors look almost black. When I started considering a pale neutral paint with pink or lilac undertones, things started popping. It works with bright orange, poppy red, greens and yellows of all sorts and the deep darks of my beautiful but difficult floors. I'm in the process of deciding where to put that etheric color -- on the walls or the chesterfield sofa I found at goodwill for $30. The elegance of the sofa could be great in pale pink, but I might go against type and use a rough linen, putting the color on the walls.
Thanks for your helpful opinion.
I Love it!!! With the right color pink, (which you have) you can do anything with it. How about adding hunter green with beige, periwinkle blue. If you like the victorian era, then pink is the perfect color. As for me, It wouldn't bother me if the whole universe was pink. I'm looking for a soft pink slip cover. Does anyone know where I can get one? I am so victorian..
