I have been spending countless hours on Pinterest collecting images from all over the web for my virtual pin boards. The ease and gratification of finding beautiful images, and sharing and following others within a social community, makes my eyes happy and keeps the inspiration flowing. The strong pickup of this site over the last couple of months makes me wonder, will this be the end of the home inspiration board?
I think the first time I was introduced to the idea of keeping an inspiration board or dream board at home was from the one and only Oprah Winfrey. I loved the idea of saving pictures that I found in magazines and organizing them just-so on the wall above my computer. Eventually the images become dated, the paper became yellow and the boards have all come down.
I've started back up again with Pinterest. Fashion inspiration, travel destinations and my dinner recipes are all virtually organized with no limit on space or categories. I can see what others are pinning, and I even have a few followers myself! Now lost in the Pinterest world, I have to ask: where's the case for the physical inspiration board?
Will everyone be a virtual inspiration board convert?

Yes, I've been on Pinterest for months and am totally addicted. My previous method of bookmarking every blog I found a gorgeous image on was starting to become unwieldy and impractical.
I've never created an inspiration board, despite having done plenty of redecorating in my home. Lately, though, I have been using pinterest to curate some ideas for some redecorating. So what may be an end to you is more of a start for me.
I'm on Pinterest daily...
pinterest.com/ania/my-portfolio & pulled many late nighters due to the endless stream in inspirational images... But I also refresh paper inspiration (clip boards!) above my studio desk regularly. papercuthearts.wordpress.com/2010/09/21/my-new-space I'm keeping both! Love the follower/following function - a visual "conversation" with strangers about our aesthetics. Along with etsy's circles, it's my favorite kind of social networking!
I've never used neither Pinterest nor an actual inspiration board. I download photos on a file, and build my own virtual board using Numbers, a great, underestimated program. I have the visual page, the budget page, and I can go from the one to the other. It's like mixing excel sheet and an inspiration board. Couldn't live without it now that we are remodeling our house !
I have started using Pinterest to make virtual design boards for my design biz, but there is something to be said about having a tactile board you can run your fingers over. I still have two large inspiration boards in my home, leaning on a picture ledge by the front door. I love to come home everyday and have that burst of inspiration to say hello to, and they also make interesting pop art. http://www.facebook.com/photo.php?fbid=174016955998992&set=a.144001519000536.30367.142556845811670&type=1&theater
You are right though, the paper does yellow, and you have to switch out for new, but that keeps it from becoming stagnant. But, I definitely see a future for Pinterest, especially in this "go green" world we are moving into.
In a word:
never.
I'm only on apartment therapy right now to see if there is something to update my pinterest :)
Yes, why the same pictures over and over? Very annoying. I really don't want to see the same pregnant belly photo shoot idea 20 times.
i haven't tried pinterest, but i will always love a physical board. collages are nothing new. my aunt made them all the time when i was a kid. in college, i decorated my door and hall with fashion photos - usually changing out themes. i'm the sort who covers a whole wall with tear outs. i just love images.
there is a precise difference btw digital and print. i have tons of images saved on my computer in a various folders for daily consultation. but there is a deep tray of images for collages/inspiration boards as well. there is just something better about the physical page. you can't quite get that close to a computer image. you just can't.
sounds like pinterest suffers from the same thing tumblr and blogger do: everyone faving and reblogging the same stuff. the past several months i've focused on finding images you don't see everywhere and it has been worth it. my flickr stream is a bit different too.
Looks interesting. Except that on the first page there's a photo of a half-naked, very thin woman with a note that says 'Probably the perfect body'... will see if I can use the site while sidestepping the thinspiration enthusiasts.
I have a folder of magazine clippings from when I was a teenager - fashion, interesting photographs, sketches that I've been meaning to scan to digital. I never read physical magazines anymore, so something like Pinterest is perfect. I didn't know it existed before this post! Right now, I have all my images in a folder on my computer, but it would be nice to organize them a little better :)
I love Pinterest too! I've never been organized enough to have a tactile inspiration board (save for fabrics, paints, and wood stains- don't translate well on a monitor.) I think Pinterest still is in the tail end of their beta phase and has some kinks to work out as far as programming and code, but being able to think of something I remember seeing somewhere online and then easily find it with a quick glance to my pinboards is priceless.
I'm completely addicted to Pinterest (despite some peeves -- including those mentioned above).
For one thing, I've never been completely confident about what my design sensibility is. But yesterday, as I looked across all of my virtual boards, I could really see definite patterns emerging. There are specific looks that thrill me, and I now recognize them whether they're present in furniture, paper ephemera, clothing, books or whatever. Somehow I never noticed this when I sorted through random magazine clips.
Also, as somebody else also mentioned, there's something to be said for drawing inspiration from a community you might otherwise not have access to. It's pretty easy to bypass the trite and repeated stuff, especially if you make good use of the tagging system.
I'm hooked!
another reason to not like flash: you can't pin flash images. Such a bummer because I love to pin the work of photographers I like, but so many photographers' sites use flash. :(
Pinterest is a totally "green" and highly efficient solution for design inspiration! Not only can you store ideas that you like without accumulating a ton of paper, but you can also, inspire others by sharing what you find! It's a win-win situation!!! I love pinning ideas for my home projects!!!
"screen capture" and "save picture as..."
Always available on my frequently backed up computer for whenever/whatever I want (within Fair Use, of course).
I love Pinterest because it helps me see that I really do have a somewhat cohesive style. I thought my tastes were all over the place, but seeing everything together helps me better understand what attracts me and sets me in a better direction re: where I can build from there.
I have been pining to get on Pinterest for a few months now! Any suggestions as to how to get an invite? The request page never seems to pan out. As of now, my virtual inspiration board consists of a word document that I have been cut and pasting into.
I wish I could get on board with Pinterest...I do love perusing the images...but the users are usually just plain dumb! They're always asking painfully obvious questions about what this is or what this isn't and it really, really irritates me. If only comments could be disabled, I may start to like it.
My head is my inspiration board. I've never actually put a collage of anything together unless it was required for a class. Haven't really looked at Pinterest...guess it's invite only?
I do love pinterest for its ability to keep all the things I find in one place! I do not however see it as the "green" option -- these websites consume a lot of energy to stay live and store all of our data in massive servers. For example, two Google searches has been equated to the energy it takes to boil a kettle of water (http://technology.timesonline.co.uk/tol/news/tech_and_web/article5489134.ece).
Thought I would check this out, but a waiting list? Really? What kind of scheme is that?
I would use pinterest, but they've never responded to my requests for an invite. That wait list is a joke.
Pinterest is my drug. That being said, I share your pet peeves of duplicate images (sorry moms, I don't think hot dogs stabbed with spaghetti are genius. gross.) I also challenge users to write their own description - "love" and "yes please" aren't descriptions. If you're weary of seeing stuff you aren't interested in, try using one of the categories at the top left to narrow down the pins. Since content is completely in the hands of the users, I urge more AT-ers to get on and share solid design! Pinterest can be a tool to organize inspiration, or a source of inspiration itself. The iPhone app, while not perfect yet, can be handy. I'm not spending money on design magazines or gathering fabric samples, I'm only cruising the web for inspiration - so for now an online version works for me.
First of all, we're really flattered to be talked about on Apartment Therapy!
Secondly, we're obviously so excited that so many pinners use their pinboards to help them with saving inspiration just as much as assisting them with real projects. It's really incredible. It means we have a lot of features to add to make sure everyone gets the most out of discovering pins as well as filtering out things they don't want to see more than once or things they don't want to see at all.
We don't think Pinterest will ever replace the tangible beauty, expression, and experience of creating inspiration boards, but we're really thrilled so many people are pinning to help with their digital spaces - thanks, guys!
For Mother's Day this year, my sister and I used them in conjunction with one another.
We're redecorating her entire bedroom, so we gave her a scrapbook-type mood board with paint chips, fabric samples, sketches and magazine cut-outs. The last page was a QC code linking her to the Pinterest board - I had stealthily installed a QC and UBC scanner app on her phone the weekend before so she knew just what to do when she saw the code!
I'll probably keep using it that way.
For the life of me I can't figure out why anyone would store anything they really want to keep in the cloud. Whether or not Pinterest stays around, the content one aggregates on their site can disappear at any time because Pinterest is not a cloud-based storage locker. Duh.
I download anything I really want to keep to a folder on my desktop.
That said, I still use pinterest cuz it's fun.
Never completely. You cannot touch textiles on a screen. Textures need to be seen in 3D I believe
I can't get enough of it. I'm in school for fashion design and organize my images in a way that is really helpful when I start a new project. Using the seven elements of fashion design I am able to categorize and remember what struck me about a certain photo. I also gather images from various museums for my History of Fashion boards which are broken down into specific eras. Come visit!

ditto urbancricket. i remember when domino made that browser app you could use to collect anything on the web. then domino folded. you didn't even have their that were saved in that. they gave fair warning, but still...
I'm with the posters about how annoying it is that it's apparently impossible to get on pinterest. I have had my request for an account in for probably 5 months. I'm a lawyer (not the most creative profession) and no one I work with has even heard of it.
I have requested an account more than once and begged all my facebook friends for an invite. I don't know why it has to be so hard to use it. I read article after article about how I should start using it, but it's totally inaccessible.
So I have files on my computer harddrive to categorize and save things that interest or inspire me. And I guess that for me, my ideas will stay private forever because Pinterest is too good for me.
Enid @ Pinterest....please get excited about me having a Pinterest account!?!?!?!! :)
i LOVE it, brilliant - no more bookmarking and saving images...now they're there and organized!
I am really surprised to read to so many accounts of long waiting time. I wonder what determines the "approval" of the requests. I got my approval to join within 24 hours of signing up for the waiting list. Very intriguing indeed.
@andijoy10 hahahhahaLOLOL! yes, that hot dog/spaghetti picture must DIE already!! I was literally cursing it 4 minutes ago. And really, the crafty moms/brides are killing me. Don't get me wrong, I love a good DIY or craft project. Maybe it's the repetition. I want more design, interior and otherwise. I must not be following the right people.
have heard of Pinterest, just having a look now ... oh OK so I need an invite. Any lovely AT peeps out there with an invite?
I believe that all of the sharing will lead to a homogenization of ideas. Boring.
I'm so backward. I simply created folders (e.g., kitchen, family room, art) within a folder labeled "home design." Whenever I see a photograph I like, I copy it and paste it into the appropriate folder.
I love Pinterest and use it for my own house and for my business (interior design and architecture). I like that the link for the original source is stored with the picture. Before I was downloading a lot of images and having to save the links in a separate file (i.e for items that eventually need to be purchased). I don't spend a lot of time looking at other people's images unless I am searching for something very specific (there are a lot of annoying images out there). I tend to use it for it uploading capabilities. They are still definitely working out the bugs and I hate when it tells me it is "busy" (which it is doing right this minute). I also wish it was easier to move images between categories and organize the images (it puts the latest image at the top). I also wish when you did search for something it would filter out all of the repeats.
I also found it was handy for putting together my son's birthday list (I could send the link to the relatives and update it as people purchased things).

If anyone wants an invite email me:
heidi (at) statelykitsch.com
I would use if it they didn't require a FB account.
I'm with you julie_k. I will never be on Facebook so anything that requires me to join is out of the question. I wish I were in Pinterest though (sigh!)
Can someone please send me an invitation?
I believe the waiting period is due to the fact that Pinterest is in a beta version right now, and too many people overload the servers. It's painfully slow as it is. Hopefully, these kinds of issues will be resolved and they will soon open it up to everybody.
Been using Pinterest for a while as well. I almost exclusively collect images and find inspirations over the internet these days. Since I don't use just one computer daily (in my office during the day), it becomes impractical to download images to the computer I'm working on everyday and consolidate them into a single folder later. Pinterest is really handy in this regard. I also like how they allows you to make notes on the image for yourself.
I too think the wait list is due to the fact that their server cannot accommodate that many people. That being said, they really really really need to update their server and have better computer programmers around. With the publicity it has gotten lately and the volume of users on there, the frequent crashes are not good for the development of this website.
I can't even figure out how to create an account, when I enter my email address the request invitation button doesn't seem to do anything.
I've had tons of inspiration bulletin boards, files and notebooks (complete with page protectors!) over the years! Bookmarking sites were great for awhile, but quickly got out of hand! Pinterest is just the best!
The interface is beautiful! It's the most wonderful place to keep and find inspiring images and ideas!
.
could be...if telephone/watch/wallet can be replaced by a cell phone and tv by a computer(viewing) why not the inspiration board?
I can't believe I waited five months (and am still waiting, to be accurate) for an invite!! I found one...
Google "how to get pinterest invite." There are tons of blogs where people say they have invites available if you sign up with them for an account or comment on their blog. That's how I got mine today! I'm very excited.
chryssy82 I just added my email address 10 min a go to the invite form and I got one from Pinterest. Easier than G+
