- Biggest Challenge of Living in a Small Space
- I share my 363 ft condo with my partner Stewart and our cat Miso. This in itself poses a big challenge. Space is at a premium, so arrangement and thoughtful planning are essential. A lot of time is spent finding furniture that adds storage and serves multiple purposes. As you can see from the pictures, some of the areas are still a bit barren. I am still looking at ideas for what to do with the hallway and bathroom.
One of the biggest struggles when we moved in was to create the illusion that we had separate rooms without physical walls. We sifted through Craigslist, Ikea and local sales for an eclectic collection of old and new furnishings with varying colors to break up the space. Cleanliness is also vital to maintaining a small living space. Establishing good habits keeps our space from becoming cluttered and feeling small.

Nice antlers!
Thanks! I boiled them myself, total cost was under $60 bucks. $35 for the antlers from a random hunter/ebayer in Tennessee, $6 for the hanging brackets and $17 for the chain. Also I am looking for affordable ideas for the entry and a new vanity/lighting for the bathroom?
Any suggestions?
The bathroom is adorable! Love the walls and the floor tile. I'm also in Minneapolis--nice to see some representation on the site! Also, Miso is a great name for a cat!
Are the TV and bookshelves in the closet? That wasn't clear from the pictures and diagram. Living area is very nice and uncluttered. Do you have any place to eat sitting down, other than at the sofa? I might move the nice trunk and put two stools at the counter if this were my apartment. But it seems like you are headed in the right direction.
Kitty!
I like this space, it's warm and cozy.
I would add an etagere to the bathroom for more storage.
An inexpensive suggestion for the entryway: a bookcase! Can be used for much more than books, and offers quite a bit of storage in a small footprint. I have one in my entryway with one shelf dedicated as a landing strip for mail, keys, sunglasses, and gloves.
I actually really like it...but cannot determine quite why, lol.
@NickGood, yes the TV is located in the area designated as a closet in the layout. It sits directly opposite the small couch. We were thinking about stools for that eating area, but we actually use the steamer trunk as a bench. I put felt pads on the bottom so it slides out easily on the wood floor. We keep extra bedding and random stuff in there.
Another request, help with that window by the bed? I don't like the way the blinds look I was thinking about other window treatments that would make that area look better but allow lots of natural light in.
Thanks so much for the suggestions, please keep em coming!
Very tidy. Nice art too! It's teeny but looks very comfy and well organized. Less really is more. Thanks for sharing!
Gotta love anyone who recycles. I do like your space. Nicely done.
That is a great kitchen considering the space is only 363 sf...I think he has more cabinet and countertop space than I do in 1100 sf not to mention the luxury of full size appliances! Seems like a really cozy space and has enough personal details to make it seem like home but remains uncluttered. I am a huge fan of wall hooks so would probably add some extra storage on that blank wall by the entry door since that seems like precious unused real estate, other than that, love the space!
Hmm, not sure about the trunk there. I thought it looked really odd and out of place, though I understand it is probably amazing storage for you in such a tiny space.
Bravo on living in that tiny area with someone else too!!! I think it would be a squeeze for one person, but 2?? Well done!
I also love your bathroom tile.
And I love that you're in Minnesota - always too many NY, LA, SF entries in this contest, so love a bit of diversity!
Thanks for the feedback everyone! We just moved in to this space in mid-November, so we have been here just under 5 months. I will be taking all these ideas into consideration as we move forward. To be honest, I felt a bit undeserving after seeing the great interiors that other people posted.
But regardless, Miso sends his thanks to those that give us some love!
That kitchen is great! I have to agree, stools would be better. The trunk does seem out of place there. I would go with backless stools, to allow the eye to see open space.
It definitely looks like you have room for a bookshelf by the door. You can leave the bottom shelf open for shoes.
You asked about the window over the bed. What about a room divider type shelving unit along the bed (leaving room to navigate the getting in and out, naturally)? I'm thinking one with no back to allow light to filter. This would allow you to treat the bed "area" as a "room" and personalize your window treatment in this area.
Otherwise, in a space as small as yours, you should try to coordinate the window treatments to be the same.
Love that you share this space. Kudos to you and your partner for your minimalist-ness (yes, I made that word up).
Miso can come live at my house if he wants. He probably won't though because he'd have to share the space with the six who already live here. I gave you a thumbs up. Cute place. You mentioned it seemed a bit barren in places?? I don't think so. I like open space.
I love the kitchen and the bathroom. Looks like the closet is as big as the bathroom. You have done a great job it seem very at home kind of place. I think I would have gotten a foldout couch instead of the bed it would give more of a living room.
@Jettsam I read about that and apparently the difference in bacteria count was negligible according to a Mythbusters. This is my take on the matter, some people have cited that having an open toilet seat is unclean, and it is unpleasant to see an open toilet. In my opinion the only reason you would want to hide your toilet bowl is if it isn’t clean. Thus if the bowl is open to the world, you are more prone to keep it clean and with the commercial design it takes just a simple wipe down with a disinfectant since there is less surface area. I would rather have invisible mist than someone flush with the toilet seat closed and accidentally leave leftover particles for the next user.
I moved some stuff around based on the comments, now I need to find some good stools. Thanks for the input :) http://www.minimal-ism.com/2012/04/small-cool-2012/
What a warm, deep, manly vibe! I like it!
You valued everyone's input and went back to work on making your space just right. Many get upset; but not you. You went to town. I think YOU ROCK.
Your place is neat and fresh. It looks like a cool guy lives here. I like the paintings above the windows.
Nice use of space. Everything is so neat and tidy. I had to search for Miso, but I found him!
He looks like a gray and white kitty? I love your little kitchen and the bathroom, too. I think the black toilet seat and the black and white tile are cool. Looks kind of retro. And I like your choice of shower curtain; it all works together. I'd use the same window treatment, I think, over the bed - the bamboo blinds. I think the windows are too close together to change it to something else. If I did, I'd make it a simple curtain in a solid color. You've got pattern going on with the rug and the bed coverlet. I think a throw blanket would look good on the end of the bed. I'd choose a color that works with the coverlet and the rug - maybe a soft gold, an ivory, or possibly a deep red. You've done a good job with your little place!
I took a look at the new pic. Like the trunk in its new place. The chairs look really low for the counter, though.
Humor me....what if...you switched the location of the TV and the stereo? Even if you had to angle the chest/TV stand in the corner, then pulled the sofa out into the open space facing the TV/kitchen so that you are facing away from the bed when in the "living" area? The "closet" could still hold the media collections.
Or did you try that already?
Out of TP I see... anyways, nice place! It feels really comfy.
@Rahskolnikov It's behind the door :)
@holly14 The previous owner actually had it set up the way you described. Unfortunately the space where we have the TV is a bit too small for seating. We are reluctant to use it for media storage because the way it is set up now adds a significant amount of sq footage to our living space. We also felt the TV was too close in the previous owner's set up.
When we have friends over (we do entertain from time to time, if you can believe that), the setup provides a big circle of seating (I usually sit or lean on the edge of the bed).
I had that same fridge in my 500 sq ft apartment. It was way too big for my kitchen and I recently sold it. It's hard moving back to an apartment sized one, but I'm glad of the extra space.
The pic of the antlers/ tv rabbit ears has just made me really happy-- I think I need to do a similar treatment around my own tv. And Miso really is a great name for a cat. Thanks for showing your place!
Cute kitchen!
