For those living in apartments with no access to a garden or yard, finding a way to develop or indulge a green thumb can be difficult. Whether you place them indoors or out, window boxes can provide the space necessary to grow a lovely selection of plants, flowers or herbs to help bring a little spring joy into even the most urban surroundings.
Outdoor window boxes are ideal for residents of smaller apartment buildings or folks who have a balcony, while indoor boxes may be a better choice for anyone in an extreme climate or a large high-rise building where the threat of falling makes outdoor installations a risky (if not outright forbidden) proposition.
When selecting plants for a window box, it is important to remember scale and to consider how much light you may lose if plants or flowers grow too high. If you choose to plant directly into the window box structure (especially indoors), you will also need to plan for irrigation and/or drainage depending on the plants. Another alternative is to keep your plants in individual pots within the window box to make for easier watering and care.
Window boxes are easy to find or easy to build if you prefer a more custom look. You can paint them a bright color for contrast, or stick with a neutral shade to better highlight the brilliant hues of your chosen flowers. Whether you choose to grow succulents, flowers, vegetables or herbs, window boxes can give you access to the garden of your dreams, on a miniature scale of course!
