We spent the weekend working scrubbing, caulking, scraping and repainting. So imagine how our poor exhausted bodies reacted to the impending start of a new work week. Instead of falling into a heap of television-induced zombiehood we snuck over to Piedmont Springs for a quick dip in an outdoor hot tub. To our surprise, the tub turned out to be an old wooden wine barrel which sent us reeling back to our childhood in Santa Cruz where our parents had one in the backyard...
Now of course, we're hooked. Anyone lucky enough to have one of these for themselves? Is it as wonderful as we imagine? Any drawbacks?

I love Piedmont Springs - I used to go there when I lived in the East Bay. I miss hot tubs, esp these wooden ones. They're not very common on the east coast. I'm sure the wine barrel ones are particularly rare. I knew someone in Oakland that had the wine barrel type--home made too. It was wonderful.

they're probably absolutely wonderful, but my first thought was Richard III and drowning someone in a barrel of mamsy (a type of wine).
Piedmont Springs' wooden hot tubs actually come from Roberts Hot Tubs over in Richmond. They have a web site where you can see them HERE.
My parents had one of these when I was growing up. Hot water chlorine wood=paper. I would peel sheets of it off the inside of the hot tub.

Yeah, they are not wine barrels. Nonetheless, they have a nice aesthetic. More expensive to buy than other hot tubs though.
