Name: Winston & Emily
Location: Mount Pleasant — Washington, DC
Winston and Emily have been in their Mount Pleasant home for one year, but they've been collecting the pieces in it for much longer. The couple's beautiful vintage furniture is complemented by rugs that Winston, who works at the World Bank and plays in a band, has bought on trips, and by artwork that PhD student Emily inherited from her artist father.
Plants and interesting lamps brighten every room, and on the second floor a giant electrified E that used to be part of a Nextel sign now serves as bookshelf, plant stand, and occasional light source.
It doesn't hurt that the couple's 3-bedroom row home, which dates to 1914, has beautiful bones and was well cared for by previous owners. Winston still wants to tackle several projects, including painting the bedroom and better utilizing their crawl space. They want to landscape their small backyard, including trying to "squirrel-proof" a peach sapling. For now, their deck is filled with containers of budding tomato, melon, and cucumber plants. Another project is to find places for all the paintings Emily inherited and which temporarily are lining the floor of an upstairs hallway.
