One neighborhood in the Netherlands is taking to the water with a large-scale houseboat development that literally floats together a fleet of 75 modern houseboats. With land at a premium and uncertain sea levels, houseboat communities make a lot of sense.
These modern houseboats were built in a modular pre-fab style with basic doors, windows and walls that are customized to the need of each individual home. Docks and interlocking ramps serve as sidewalks, connecting the buildings to the community. Considering the effects of climate change on sea levels, floating neighborhoods might be just the type of adaptive development needed.
