Finding balance when working from home can be a challenge, albeit a desirable one for most. A freelancer often wishes he or she could just leave work at work, by closing a door to it all, but having a home office is a luxury that one can not usually afford in a small home. Fortunately for my brother Matt, the previous owners of his small bungalow had almost finished converting a single-car attached garage into additional livable space.
When Matt moved in, the remaining projects for the conversion were pouring the footer for the wall where the garage door used to be, installing new flooring, and putting in baseboards and trim. The office was completed at a slow and convenient pace, and thankfully, the completion date conveniently fell around the time Matt lost his office job and began freelancing full-time as a graphic designer.
With housemates (my husband and I) no longer sharing the space, Matt is finally closer to fleshing out the vision of his dream office, complete with functional storage for his design libraries, paper collection, and, of course, wall space for posters and inspiration.

Shaw's Original Fir...
Did you repaint the lockers (if so, what brand paint did you use?) or were they that great orange when you snagged them?
Looks great! I'm working on my live/work space now, tough to organize it all. Agree the orange lockers are fab. Love the little doggie :)
Looks like a fantastic creative space! Love the hand scraped hardwood floor. Do you have the wood type/source for that? Perfect environment for creative stimulation. Love it, well done.
I don't know about the orange lockers but I painted mine purple with spray paint, it worked great.
I love it. For a narrow, enclosed work space, the lighting is fantastic. I imagine that window wall could be used as precious storage / organization space, but I think good bright natural light to stay energized & inspired while you work is even more important.
Again, I love it! Great space.
Is Matt single? Love the house too...
Love it! I really want lockers for my studio one day. Right now we just have an "art room", but eventually I want a studio above the garage we have yet to build.
Also, the dog is really cute :)
Tiny garage = Spacious office. Nice.
This is a great space. Almost as cute as the dog. Almost as cute as Matt.
The floors are beautiful too.
Those lights above the desks are gorgeous. And the orange trim in the entry *swoons*. Aodrable dog.
this is excellent! love it :)
OHMYGOSH I AM IN LOVE.
Not with you Matt, though you are not hard on the eyes ;)
I am now dying for a house with an (un)attached garage (I live in a condo) so I can have a studio too. I am desperate for a separate creative space and I NEED THIS! GREAT work. I love everything you did!
Ooh... love everything from the black quilted chair to the credenza to the orange lockers. The floor is really beautiful too.
Nah screw it, before I said I wanted an unattached garage because I was thinking I could "walk to work" (LOL) and have everything out of sight/out of mind when I left, but having it attached means easy access to the kitchen. Me likey.
oh, hello Matt and cute dog. I love what you did with the space I love the light blue coat rack paired with the orange lockers - looks great!
you're out of tape in photo #7.
i love the space but wish you would have shown the outside of the garage as well as some before and afters.
Yeah - another space with a vintage poster!! As a vintage poster dealer I keep sending clients to your site so they can see how easy vintage posters are to integrate with any design -- although I can't see all of Matt's poster I can see enough to know it's the real deal! Good on 'ya Matt! (And yes, cute dog. Nice floors. And then there's Matt + a poster. I for one couldn't ask for more!)
Ha ha .. @sarahvick I was thinking the SAME THING. Does Matt come with the space?
Awesome conversion. I own a hard loft and the use of space, colours, etc. is excellent. Matt - what's your design website?
Add me to the list of Matt's admirers. ROWR. LOL.
I know, I know, I'm superficial. But he's so pretty :)
The shoe holder in the locker is brilliant. OK, OK, it's a small thing. But how smart and practical.
Another Matt fan.
Your brother is hot.
Thanks for all the positive feedback! It's really encouraging :)
The lockers were already orange, so that was a lucky coincidence.
The lights above the desks were a closseouts from CB2. So again, lucky!
@ edgaroso, that's too funny! I'll go refill that right away.
Thanks again, for taking a look at the space.
What? No tour of the kitchen space? Why not - we can see it's there.
There is just so much to love in this space...the orange lockers (and accents)...the cute dog, and, of course, Matt himself...brought a smile to my face...
I, too, pretty much only clicked on the link to get a better look at Matt. ...Including the little dog in the photos is just shamelessly blatant chick baiting, though! (Still, it worked.) ;-)
What else can I say but "Hubba Hubba".
Love this. This is hands down one of the best spaces I've seen in a long time.
Ha! I clicked through to see if Matt had any marriage proposals yet!
Matt is handsome.
Matt is gorgeous, the dog it cute and the space is awesome!!
Very nice! Where can I find the sawhorses and table top like yours? Thank you.
Really cute space... to match your brother. ;D In all seriousness, this is wicked cool, I like the pops of orange and the way you've reworked the lockers and crates as dedicated storage for specific items. I'm filled with envy.. and lust. ;p
What a lovely flat with a lovely dog!
He likes good music too! Arcade Fire is sweet, just saw them at Coachella.
I love this!
Sigh... can I teleport into this house... complete with guy and dog? I could use a vacay right now... ;) I WILL Find a place like this to rent, I will, I will (little engine that could, that's me). Cookie cutter townhouse is getting to me.
I have 2 of those black quilted chairs with ottomans that I purchased at an estate sale. Do you know anything about it?
Haha. Who needs online dating when there's AT? Matt, you blushing yet? (I too LOVE the shoe org in your lockers. Great job!)
@ niabassett If you look at the bottom of the post, there is a link to Matt's house tour, where you can not only see the kitchen, but the rest of the house as well. Also, if you want to cut to the chase, this post chronicles his kitchen before & after: http://www.apartmenttherapy.com/chicago/kitchen/before-after-kitchen-transformation1990-traditional-to-2010-transitional-138143
@stargazerforever: The end of the post tells what Matt's sources for things are. The desks are from Ikea.
The lockers for shoe storage look great! What a neat space.
Looks awesome for any kind of converted space but especially for a converted garage!! Great Job! Love the lockers!
What's the flooring? Looks really good in the photos. Real solid wood, engineered wood, pergo, vinyl??
Matt's place looks very attractive and efficient.
Anyone know what you'd call the general style of the Liberty poster? And is it sold anywhere? Really diggin' the whole look.
What is the gray paint color name(second photo)?
I'm looking for a nice gray for a bedroom.
This is sweet. I'm really liking the combo of woods, metals, old and new....perfection :)
Good job, clean and simple is really the way to go. I thought the office chair was vintage, I like it a lot.
shoes in the locker? brilliant
So glad I wasn't the only one whose reaction to this post was, in order, 1) Matt is adorable and I wonder if he's married, 2) his dog is adorable, 3) his space is fantastic. :)
Flooring: The floors are hand-scraped wood from Lumber Liquidators. I think they are walnut.
Liberty poster: sorry, no idea!
Gray paint: sorry, I don't think he has the paint information any more.
Well, thanks for all the kind words!
The flooring is actually hand-scraped birch (with a dark stain).
The paint? I'm sorry, but I can't remember :(
Hope this helps!!
