We think this World Map Wall Mural is a great piece for any home with children. The size (8'h x 13'w) really makes an impact in any room and the directions say it's easy to put up.
It's available from Urban Outfitters online for $140.

Oh, please, $140? For $15 I bought an atlas book and decoupaged the pages to my wall five years ago. (Glazed over with a beige paint for 'aging' effect.) It still looks amazing and gets lots of compliments. Tons cheaper.
We're in process of sourcing a map mural for my 6 year old son's attic bedroom. He lives in a shoe-box size room and we're planning on putting one up in his room a wall which is about 6' wide by 8' high.
The rest of the room is truly tiny - and quite dark. Any ideas what colour paint would go well with a world-map wall? His duvet cover (which he picked recently and will refuse to change) is a mix of blues, turquoises and green - http://www.ikea.com/ca/en/catalog/products/20099547 (in the blue colour)
Once we're done I'll send in pics and maybe it'll be nice enough to share.

p.s. I don't think $140 is too high for a good-quality mural - so long as its printed beautifully on high quality paper, I think $140 is fair. The best price I've seen is around $99...the trick is trying to find a place that ships cheaply to Canada!
Smellyann,
Good idea with the atlas book, any tips for the decoupaging?
I work in the Education Dept. at a small art museum and we bought and installed this exact map a few years ago in our children's gallery. It was really easy to install, as I believe it even came with the vinyl paste. The only tricky thing, like all wallpapering, was getting the pieces to line up. From what I remember this came in 4 sheets, and it was durable enough to last through hundreds of kids in our gallery. It also came down easily and can be rehung if we use it again for another installation. It is a little pricey, but it made a huge impact in our space.
I got what looks to be the same map from amazon for $90. A friend and I put it up in a couple of hours. Pretty easy to do and it looks awesome.
