Look out, London and sit down, Singapore, the world's largest ferris wheel will be right here in the US. On Staten Island, to be exact. Planned for completion in 2015, Mayor Bloomberg announced yesterday that the 625 foot tall New York attraction will begin construction on a site close to the ferry terminal in early 2014.
In other news, catch a flick about California architecture and eagerly await the return of the Kissing Room at Grand Central. See the headlines after the jump.

Nomade Express Slee...
On the one hand, that's kind of cool... but who really cares how tall it is when the only views you have are South Brooklyn and dirty Jers? I'd take a shorter ride for views of Parliament and the Singapore bay any day!
Some trivia for those interested in the origin of Ferris' ferris wheel:
Ferris introduced his first wheel at the Chicago's World Fair in 1893. Burnham, the fair's overall organizer resisted Ferris' initial proposals and it took over a year of various presentations on Ferris' part to convince Burnham that a verticle wheel would in fact turn and actually carry passengers aloft. For those interested in learning more about the inception and realization of this fair as well as having a fascinating mystery interwoven throughout I would recommend Eric Larson's THE DEVIL IN THE WHITE CITY.
This is a stupid Idea

Hmm, you sure you know New York City well? Look at what's in the middle of the wheel. That's the New York City skyline, one of the most impressive in the world. The Statue of Liberty will be even closer. The longest suspension bridge in America, the Verrazano-Narrows, will also be nearby.
You will not be looking at "South Brooklyn." You will be looking at the west side of Brooklyn. At 625ft the view should be much more impressive than the one in London, considering the view is already much more impressive at ground level. At that height you'll also start seeing much of the beautiful forested areas surrounding the tri-state area.

Here is a better drawing.
