Growing up, I remember every carpeted home or office had a rolling computer chair and one of those hideous plastic gripping mats. The idea was to make the wheels able to slide over an otherwise carpeted area...
But now that computers are everywhere—and we mean everywhere: the living room, bedroom and the kitchen—we're inclined to make sure our workspaces are better looking.
Real chairs without wheels are taking over, and, in this case, some people actually putting the carpets back down.
We spotted this Mother-and-Son workspace image on Lifehacker and were immediately drawn to the way that the pair had accented their workspaces with desk-area rugs.
What do you think, Unplggd? Do you like the definition of space you get from a look like this? Or do you think putting a rug under your desk chair is silly and cumbersome? Tell us in the comments!

I have one at my desk.
I have carpeting in my music studio and use to have just the plastic mat under my rolling chair but I put a nice decorative rug on top of the mat and the chair rolls on it quite well. It improves the look of the studio and during the winter, it keeps the cold off my feet.
Well in some cases, I think the plastic mat is actually to protect the carpet more than to allow rolling. I recently added one to my workspace since my carpet was getting messed up. But I could have done with a rug as well if I had found an inexpensive one of the right size.
