For the past 6 weeks we have been using various titles for the Xbox 360 in a quest to get healthier. We've discovered new Kinect activities we've loved and those we would rather skip, but at this point during week 6 we're getting a bit tired. Should our quest end here?
Last week Your Shape: Fitness Evolved gave me quite the workout, and I hoped to continue the getting healthy kick into week 6. However as I entered this week the terrible allergy season combined with the heat in the apartment completely sapped any desire to be full of fitness. Between all of the busyness that is going on in life and feeling under the weather there are times when the last thing you want to do is not nap.
A piece on the joys of napping is not at all fitting for Unplggd so I decided it was time to look for some motivation to continue the Kinect health quest. I found this motivation in the form of a video by fitness expert Jennifer Galardi in which she talks about the power of using the Kinect for as little as ten minutes a day and suggest mini games as a way to sneak in small workouts.
Sappy as it sounds the video did its job in getting me off of the couch and back into the swing of things. This week instead of focusing on one specific title it was all about the mini games that the various titles had to offer.
While I cannot say that my ten minutes bowling have helped me get healthier in a big way this week, I do think that they have helped me to maintain an increased activity level and the movement does indeed contribute to improved health in the long run via better habits. Instead of napping or browsing some of my favorite blogs, the 10 (sometimes 20) minutes spent playing the mini games helped to get the blood pumping in a way that did not feel like exercise and have kept me from being a sneezing sedentary human this week.
What has your experience been with using the Kinect to work out? How do you stay motivated?
