Let's say you have a Master of Fine Arts degree from the University of Washington. You're a sculptor in Seattle for about 10 years, showing your work there as well as in many other cities across the country. You become quite well known for your sculptures and your glass installations. You then teach Art in a private college in Detroit for several years. What next? Well, if you're Gary Andolina, you're influenced by the function and design that you see in a city known for auto design and industrial design, and you return to Seattle, where you design and build tables.

The minimal design of the tables is similar to Andolina's philosophy in his sculpture. Stripped to only a few materials -- the table tops are made of bamboo plywood and the legs are stainless steel or gun-blued steel -- those materials become very important and are the focus of the work.

Gary Andolina's dedicated to the use of renewable wood resources. He says, The bamboo is VERY important as well for its green properties and renewable status as a "grass" plant and not a tree. It grows very fast and is mature in three years.

Studioandolina's tables are made to order and require about a two week lead time. Prices range from $300 for a pair of small side tables, to $650 for a sofa/entry table or a large coffee table.

At the moment Andolina's concentrating on tables, but he's planning to design lighting next.
