Many of us love a good eco-friendly diy— especially when someone else takes care of the 'y' part of the equation. Sophie Aschauer— founder of SerpentSea— has done just that with her new line of gorgeous floor mats. Her mats are hand woven from reclaimed sailing ropes and are configured in various styles named for famous pirates.
Admittedly, I know nothing about the validity of these or any pirate names; I am acquainted, however, with more labor intensive, craft-room versions of her concept, the 'how to make a doormat' guides that typically yield the kind of macaroni hot plate results that only a mother could love.
But Aschauer's mats are tightly woven of sailing twine, saturating the pieces with sophisticated color palettes, including fushias, limes and royal blues. The pieces will certainly have special meaning to anyone with an interest in sailing, the ocean or (if such a person exists) rope in general. Ultimately though, anyone who appreciates bold color and clean, modern lines will be drawn to these nautically-sexy mats.
