We're all for striped rugs, and lately, we've also noticed the Missoni-esque chevron rugs too (and we're all over those too--and if anyone knows where to get one of these chevron rugs in LA, please tell us!) As much as we experiment with bedding textures and patterns, we're not as skilled with the layering of rugs. Part of it could be that rugs are way more expensive, and the other part is that we often buy a rug size big enough to fit the entire room.
However, with open floorplans being the norm nowadays and we're attempting to differentiate "areas" in bigger rooms, what are some good rug pairings? For example: if we have an 8x10 shag rug in a living room, but want a smaller, narrower rug for the space off to the side where the kids like to play, would be it visually be too much, too weird to go with a striped dhurrie?

i think it'd look great, Grace--
i too have been on the hunt for a chevron rug-- its what i think i want in my living room...but then again, i've been through 5 rugs in 9 months!! im going Persian if i can find one at the Rose Bowl, but we'll see...
if i find a source for chevron ll let you guys know!
Not an heirloom, but nice multi-colored zig-zags...this is the one I'm thinking about for our entry....In my situation, with 4 little kids who have already damaged two nice rugs (albeit, one was cream colored and not the best choice for children) I think I need to stick with a super low cost option for now...this might be the entry runner for us:

Great rugs!
Thanks polkadot! I like the multicolored, but not sure if it'll go with my living room. I hear you on the cream-colored rugs though: I bought a cream shag and am constantly worried about my dog doing some doggy damage to it. (My friend has a white shag rug and she about lost her marbles when her new cat puked on it...) I did some digging around and the chevron rug that's in the photo is on the pricey end--like $1000 for a wee 4x6! meh. Maybe I'll cross my fingers and hope that West Elm does a knock off rug for next season ;)! goodnightdean, if you do find a rug resource, please share!!
The best picture I've seen of that striped rug was in red, in Domino with a suzani bench at the end of it. I think it's posted over at Peak of Chic or Style Court somewhere, and it's expensive as hell. I assume West Elm will be ripping it within the year...
oops, I meant the zig zag rug. It was Style Court "attracted to the same things" Here it is:

In a back issue of domino they featured the apartment of some interior design kid who has an online column for domino right now. I can't remember his name...Olsen something...I'm too lazy to actually do a search. He was supercute, that's what I do remember.
Anyway, his apartment was sorta amazing and he had a chevron rug, which he created with a rug from Pier1 and some paint. It had a great, slightly-weathered look and seemed pretty simple to create.
Nick Olsen, I think.
its nick olsen and his apartment is amazing.
and becky, Krista Ewart's bedroom is exactly what sealed the deal for my new love of chevron rugs...i wish i could find one that big!
I have seen a couple of versions of these in Domino and Vogue magazine from Maharaja Dhurries. They make made-to-order versions in all sizes and colors, mainly stripes. They can do the Chevron I think in a large size. At http://www.indiandhurries.com or http://www.maharajatent.com.
