Disco balls may not be your first item on the list for decorating your home but they are surprisingly chic looking and even add a bit of sparkle to the room on a sunny day or with well placed lighting.
I love the size and hanging height of the one in the first image especially.

Tacky!! The only place this belongs is on the Dancing with the Stars trophy!
Love. I want one in my house now!
Oh, I want that first room so badly. Beautiful!
Can one of you design experts explain (briefly) how that 1st room works? I see competing colors, textures, shapes, sizes, styles...and yet the room is amazing! Thank you for any info.
Hmm...I'm not reallly feeling that disco ball. I think it may be better accessory for the bedroom?
I am so buying a disco ball today. Must. Have. Now.
How right for a sunny room (rather than a nightclub)!
I like sparkly things, and heaven help me I love these. No disco ball in my house, but I do have a mirrored curtain in the window, which gives the same effect.
SQ - I had the same thought when I saw the first room! It looks like they totally embraced the global eclectic look but with a semi-muted palette. Also the gold toned yellow is used throughout with varying degrees of saturation form the painting to the applique on the throw to the natural fiber rug to the honey hued wood. Also despite the varying styles, all the furniture is relatively low and informal which helps establish a form of cohesion. As for the disco ball in that room, it's the "off" element that adds a whole different level of unexpected visual interest.
Loving all things glitzy (but trying to not let that impact too much on my decor) I have a reputation. My boss (as a joke) gave me a tennis-ball sized disco ball on a little battery operated base, so it spins on command. I recently discovered that my cats LOVE chasing the sparkles across the wall when I place the thing in a strong sunbeam! Best cat toy (apart from the laser pointer) ever!
this post couldn't be more timely for me!
We just moved this past weekend and in setting stuff in random places, just to get stuff moved, I set my honey's disco ball on our mantle and - well - it just worked! so there is stays!! It actually looks perfect with the blues and oranges already working in the room.
I'll be posted pics of the living room soon here:

I'd love to hear everyone's take on it!!
I just gave a friend of mine some hammered brass disco ball curtain rod finials I bought on ebay. She has a similar palette to this in her bedroom, as well!
No, no, no, no, no, no. No.
No.
Wow, gotta give credit to the disco ball. Something regarded as flashy, tacky, and dated totally works well in these modern, chic apartments. Pic #2 with the blue sofa is def my favorite!
The disco ball I received in college (a joke) has stayed somewhere sunny wherever I have moved, I love the way the light bounces around from it. Whenever my addition is finished (darn economy) it will join a few friends large & small to hang out with inside my fireplace.
This just makes me laugh. I would never put a disco ball in my house, but it's funny that people do.
I used to go by this house every day on the el, just north of the Belmont station, that had a disco ball tucked up into the pointy roof over the top floor balcony. It looked so fun and whimsical. I don't think I could live with one in my living room, but in the backyard, why not!
I've had a disco ball hanging in my office for years, strung from a paper clip wedged into the flourescent lighting that's too ugly to turn on. It makes me laugh.
i really like the effect that the second room creates and thinks it works lovely in the third one.
I kinda like the tacky balls juxtaposed against some of the more formal rooms. Not sure I would do it, but it's fun. Good for warding off the evil eye too! ;)
love love love #2. it makes the room dreamy and magical. the rest, not so much. but now i know what to do with the disco ball from my daughter's disco-themed birthday party...
Funny and quirky in the best cases. I like it!
I like how unexpected they are in some of these rooms. If you can make it work, more power to you!
I like the length of the ball in the first picture and the 1/2 ball pendant in the seventh picture.
photo #1 is from elle decor, it ran last year, an artist's apartment in the village, nyc.

Whether you're a brother or whether you're a mother...
I like them. I'd like to see a grouping of 3 in different sizes over a large table or in a corner.
Three different sizes probably would be cool Sally305. I'm not a fan of them alone, but that's what makes interior design so fun. :)
And thx Lady J for the article, that room is cute! (it wont work in my firefox but does in IE)
A gazing/yard ball would be a slightly different take on it....

Personally, I love the disco balls!
We have a small one in the bathroom, and it's fun! Thing is, the disco ball must have light shining on it to work. Some of these rooms look odd because the disco ball is just not being "disco".
I like the disco balls, but the space must be right for them! First room does it for me - I have just bought my own small (400 square foot) apartment and need some ideas for decorating. Thanks for the inspiration already!
technically it's called a mirrorball. it works so well in #1 because it is in a corner btw two windows that get direct sunlight
i once put a rotating disco ball in my fireplace and then filled the fireplace with candles and walla, I had the look of a blazing fire in my fireplace. Quite ingenius if I don't say so myself.
I want to paint the top part of my bathroom black and hang a disco ball in there.
