Say what? "...16 West 21st Street provides a stately yet minimalistic canvas, affording Posen the opportunity to create an environmental tapestry that evokes the rich colors and textures that are emblematic of his approach to fashion."
Posen, the wunderkind fashion design star of the 2000s, is trying his hand at interiors. Fair enough. His unique artistic talent could very well extend beyond clothing. But judging from an interview done by The Real Deal, this may be nothing more than a project to carry him through rough times, or perhaps an attempt to plug his new line of furniture due out later this year.
From a design standpoint, what is your vision for 16 West 21st Street?
To invoke desire -- and bring some warmth and regality to industrial New York City.
What parts of the building are you working on?
The model apartment [plus] all kitchens, bathrooms, fixtures, finishes, and overseeing surfaces for the gym, lobby and amenities.
Will you be designing buyers' apartments for them?
No, not unless they are really wealthy. I have very expensive taste.
What elements of designing fashion are applicable to interior design? In other words, what makes you qualified for the job?
I was born qualified, I consider myself an aesthete.
What are you using for inspiration?
Mixing decorative whimsical gestures with clean, 21st century high design.
The real estate market, and especially new development condos, is still in a slump. Why choose now to align yourself with a real estate project?
I see the recession as an opportunity to get into new ventures.
Condos that have collaborated with fashion designers have had challenges. Peter Som at 485 Fifth Avenue, Armani at 20 Pine, for example. Does that concern you?
What real estate endeavors are you planning in the future?
It's all about the right opportunity at the right time.
How much do you get paid for something like this?
We're not sure if Posen has the stuff to justify such talk. But we'll find out for sure at the building's March 18th opening event, when the model apartments will be unveiled.
