ZVOX: Z-Base Goes Surround In Platform Form Factor

It seems like there's been a spike in releases of "surround sound emulating" speakers these past few months, but hey, we always welcome the competition. In the left corner you have Zvox, with their new Z-Base 550 system. Designed to go under your HDTV set (though maybe throwing a huge CRT TV on it may not be that great of an idea) or be tucked away between shelves in a cabinet - we personally think the latter would look better aesthetically, but hey, some may prefer that retro monitor-stand appeal.

Man, it really does look like one of those monitor stands, does it not? Here are a few highlights from the Z-Base 550 system:

The Z-Base 550 is the only surround sound system designed to act as a base platform for most 26" - 50" flat-panel TVs. Only three inches thick, the Z-Base virtually disappears when placed beneath a flat panel TV. The entire system–speakers, amplifier, virtual surround technology and powered subwoofer–fits into the super-slim cabinet.

Set-up of the Z-Base 550 requires very few steps: Simply place the unit on a stable shelf, table or cabinet. Place your stand-mounted flat-panel TV on top of it. Plug in AC power, one connecting cord to the TV... [and you'll] get a room full of sound without a roomful of speakers and wires!

The unit comes in a scratch resistant black gloss finish and is available now for $500 direct.
