Matt’s UES Flowers: The Work of Fairies?
The Upper East Side flowerboxes sprang to life this past week. The townhouse owners were jockeys charging to a finish line, the flowerboxes frothing and seething like thoroughbreds.
Delivery trucks, gardeners and landscapers all arrived at the scene, converging on little plots of square soil, and then disappearing as quickly – all to give the impression that these flowers were the work of fairies, magically springing to life overnight…
If you look closely in the pictures, however, you will see a soiled fairy handprint on the wall of the building. I took these pictures of a very ambitious plot on east 78th street between Park and Lexington. The colors were astounding. The owner knew what the effect of the hydrangia’s blue would be against the warm brown of the townhouse facade.
