Both professional interior designers and crafters/DIYers struggle with the same kinds of problems: how to make a small room feel larger, how to bring ample light through less than ample windows, and where in the world to store all of that extra fabric for future projects.

With a dedicated craft room, storage space is probably not a concern. But the mere nature of fabric—being pliable and prone to wrinkling—makes storage a challenge, even if space is plentiful. A few clever souls manage to make it work, using whatever is at their disposal and thankfully they’ve shared their secrets online.

Check out the solutions below, examples include showing how to make use of open shelves, file folders, jars, plastic sheets, curtain rods, and cork board to store endless amounts of fabric and fabric scraps in easy visible, always-reachable ways.

  1. Textiles on shelves, bolts, and a bulletin board in the studio of interior designer Caitlin Wilson.
  2. Caitlin also keeps scraps in meticulously labeled wire drawers.
  3. A dresser—minus the drawers—was painted and turned into open shelving for Cindy of Cameras and Chaos.
  4. Linda of Craftaholics Anonymous keeps fabric sorted on a curtain rod, using curtain rings with clips attached.
  5. Traditionalists who want to keep their fabric on bolts can take a cue from Home + Away with Lisa, where tall bolts are stashed in an IKEA Billy bookcase.
  6. Or make mini-bolts out of plastic board, like The Little Green Bean.
  7. Lots of little scraps? Store them in an apothecary jar, like this one spotted on Pretty Prudent.
  8. Or try a combination of bolts and jars, like these from Girl. Inspired. arranged artfully on a shelf.
  9. Literally file your fabric away and keep everything visible on hanging file folders, as displayed by Lauren of The Thinking Closet.
  10. Folded fabric fits nicely into wall-mounted plate racks or mail racks, as Design Mom Gabrielle shows us from a peek into her office.
