Whether it’s using one of its famous HEMNES bookcases or LACK wall shelves, the Swedish home goods superstore is known for having products with a million uses. So it comes as no surprise that something as unassuming as a spice rack would be useful for more than just holding your paprika and oregano.

While it’s much smaller than some of IKEA’s top shelving units, the brand’s BEKVAM rack can be reworked to serve as bathroom storage, a jewelry rack, and even as a nursery bookshelf. All it takes is some paint and an eye for thinking outside of the flat-pack furniture box. Up ahead, you’ll see 13 ingenious ways for repurposing an IKEA spice rack and making it work in nearly any space.

1. Plentiful pegboard organization

Pegboard DIYs have never been more popular, but it’s easy for them to look a little boring. To take it up a notch, you can copy this idea from from Steph Bond-Hutkin for using a BEKVAM rack to add some color and extra storage.

2. Chic kids’ clothing rack

These spice racks are DIY nursery staples. Skeptical? Take a look at the magic Huisje Bij De Brink did by making her BEKVAM into an adorably tiny clothing rack for your little one. It’s the perfect size for hanging a neat array of tiny T-shirts and onesies.

3. Arts and crafts storage

Your craft room is about to get a lot cooler. Transforming these spice racks to serve as containers for craft supplies, like Vanessa did here, is a brilliant way of keeping all those buttons, needles, and other fun odds and ends tidy.

4. Dangle your jewelry

Nothing is more irritating than having to spend 15 minutes untangling jewelry when you’re trying to get ready for the day. This idea from Imogen Butcher shows how you can hang up necklaces and other pieces to save them from knotting.

5. Tidy up your toiletries

All those serums and moisturizers need a place to return, and doubling up on storage with two spice racks like Ricarda Ratsch did here is a perfect solution. An organized storage space means no more mess of bottles around the sink or overstuffed medicine cabinets.

6. Cookbook display

While it’s still in the kitchen, this spice rack strays from its original purpose by serving as a cookbook rack. Cathryn May of Grove Cottage Cornwall uses BEKVAM to highlight her favorite culinary reads.

7. Elevated kitchen shelves

These shelves are storing spices, but surpass the classic unfinished wood condition that BEKVAM comes in. Antje Poppe painted hers white and added metal name plates for fresh cottage-style spin.

8. Itty bitty bookshelf

Using spice racks as kid-friendly bookshelves, like Ming Sun did here, allows your wee ones to grab books on their own time and also keeps them organized. The raw wood also gives a nice touch of minimalism in this ultra stylish room.

9. Save counter space

Getting creative in small spaces is key for letting style and storage exist in harmony. Melissa Remanda Designs optimized her bathroom’s available space by using the BEKVAM as a wall-mounted shelf.

10. Hidden storage

Amanda Seamans of Her Happy Home shows another perfect example of how you can use the BEKVAM as a mini bookshelf. Her variation is unique thanks to its bright colors and her choice of  putting it in an inconspicuous space. Not many people would consider utilizing the small space beneath a window for storage.

11. Display shelves

Another fabulous nursery hack: Jo Gultig incorporated three BEKVAM racks to serve not only as a method of organization, but simply as a display shelf for baby-friendly decor. A mix of racks can make for a clean, impeccably styled room.
