When Geevie Wood, co-founder of Sustain Yourself, was searching for the perfect rental apartment in Minneapolis, Minnesota, she wasn’t willing to compromise. “I lived at my mom’s at the time, so I was willing to wait until the perfect one popped up,” Wood writes.

And the 1920s one-bedroom space she landed on was worth the wait. It checked all the boxes, which include “hardwood floors, white walls, south/west facing windows (I’m a plant mom), a window in the bathroom, a decent bright kitchen, and some kind of character throughout,” Wood shares.

Geevie (who built a sustainable lifestyle Instagram page with her sister, Sophia) has been furnishing her space entirely with secondhand items since she moved in three months ago. The historic features in the 735-square-foot home — like the original ice box, porcelain floating sink, built-in ironing board, and an exterior cubby for milk or ice deliveries — impressed her.

“I love decorative interior architecture features that don’t really serve a purpose (the window was for quickly transferring ice/milk into the kitchen back in the ‘20s, but now it’s just decorative),” Wood writes. “It’s just so unique and something I’ve never seen in an apartment before, so I just love it.”
