1stdibs Founder Launching Two New Antiques Ventures

Michael Bruno founded online antique mall 1stdibs over 16 years ago. After leaving five years ago, he’s now bringing two new businesses to the design space that will launch this month.

Don’t expect the new ventures to be 1stdibs clones, though; Bruno wants to do something new.

“Looking back now, it seems as though the transparency of having everything on the open internet nearly killed the experience of shopping in stores and removed all of the mystery that made the business exciting, fun and profitable,” Bruno said in a PR email. Design Carta and Touring Mode are meant to bring a little of that mystery back.

Design Carta is a trade-only site for design and antiques, where dealers give an exclusive first look to those in the industry. Touring Mode is part shopping, part travel guide, where you can star favorite dealers to be alerted when they have new inventory that’s in-store exclusive, or follow their neighborhood recommendations for a fun day of browsing about town.

Both Design Carta and Touring Mode are set to launch mid-October.
