25 Cheap and Chic Upgrades for Spring

If you're clearing out your house to do a little spring cleaning, or just trying to downsize, take a second look at your cast-offs. Who says they can only have one use? Before you toss them, take a look at Whole Living's ideas to reuse your old stuff, and make it look good!

Green guru Danny Seo recently helped Whole Living gather inspiration for eco-chic ideas for the home. We particularly love the ones that give new, beautiful life to otherwise forgotten household goods — here are a few of our favorite:

1 Mixed Glass Centerpiece: "Grouped together on a tray and filled with leaves and flowers, weathered bottles and jars make an easy table dressing. 'In quantity, simple vessels can look so dramatic,' says Seo."
2 Sweater Seats: "Cozy up a set of chairs by reupholstering them with pieces from outgrown or thrift-store sweaters..."
3 Rustic Candles: "Melt down the dregs of burned-out candles to make new ones in old flowerpots..."
4 Tiered Tray: "Find new purpose for mismatched dinnerware sets in the form of a tiered serving tray for hors d'oeuvres or desserts, or use as a catch-all for jewelry, keys, and other small knickknacks..."
5 Soap Bottle: "We're often told to buy cleaners in bulk to save on packaging, but it's not always practical and doable to keep a gallon-size jug of dish soap by the sink. A clear plastic condiment bottle left over from the last BBQ easily dispenses with the problem..."

6 Cork Trivet: "They don't just keep your wine from spilling and spoiling; corks can also protect your tables and countertops from hot pots and pans..."
7 Oxford Napkins: "At some point, a cotton button-down wears out its welcome on a hanger. Turn it into cloth napkins or dishcloths, reducing your need for paper products. 'The softer and more worn, the better,' says Seo. 'Faded plaids and check patterns look especially great...'"
8 See-Through Storage: "Clear glass Mason or spaghetti-sauce jars serve as convenient receptacles for cotton swabs, bandages, soap bars, and other bathroom necessities. 'When you're in a rush to get ready,' says Seo, 'it helps to be able to see what's inside...'"
9 T-Shirt Pillows: "Perk up your couch or love seat with throw pillows fashioned out of vintage Ts. 'If you don't sew --and I don't -- you can take the cut pieces to a dry cleaner or tailor and have them make the basic stitches for you,' suggests Seo..."
10 Scarf Quilt: "Turn those winter scarves collecting dust in the back of your closet into one-of-a-kind blankets..."
