25 Green Home Gifts Under $25

We've all been there: what do you get your [insert names of parents, siblings, best friends, and co-workers] when you also have to get something for [insert distant relatives here] and you only have a budget of [insert the small number in your head, or do it silently if you don't even want to share it with us]. Well, we love DIY presents, of course. But if you don't have the skill or time to make a batch of granola or knit a tea cozy, don't despair. There are plenty of lovely eco-friendly gifts under $25 (with many under $15) that are sure to suit everyone on your holiday list. Here are a few of my favorites:


1. Building Block Candle Holders, $14 from Terrain: Crafted from reclaimed wood floor joists taken from a 19th century home in Philadelphia, these tea light holders are finished with 100% pure tung oil and decoupaged with black and white harvest illustrations. Each holder also comes with one hand-poured unscented beeswax tea light candle. 2"H, 2"W, 2"D"
2. Solid Brass Bicycle Bell, $20 from Canoe: Made of solid brass, this brass bell is rust-proof and will mellow over time to a rich patina.
3. Wabi Sabi for Artists, Poets, Designers and Philosophers, by Leonard Koren, $10.88 from Amazon: Design philosopher Leonard Koren's cherished book is an understated yet compelling presentation of the core Japanese design principle that looks for beauty in things imperfect, impermanent, and incomplete.
4. Reclaimed Apothecary Matchstick Bottle, $20 from Magpie & Rye: These reclaimed apothecary medical serum bottles have been re-purposed into matchstick bottles hand-etched on the bottom to create a strikeable surface. Bottle is 3.75" tall and 2" in diameter.
5. Small Dauville Gold-Brushed Bowl, $22 from Canvas: beautiful, handmade nesting bowls with a splash of glamour!


6. Sankaku Lavender Sachet (Set of 3), $12 at Supermarket: made with remnants of beautiful Yokomono Studio fabrics, each triangle shape sachet is filled with dried lavender and attached with cotton yarn for hanging. A great stocking stuffer!
7. Salty Singles, $20 from Perch! We love anything Perch! does, and these cheery salt shakers are no exception.
8. Felted Organic Olive Oil Soap Set, $21 at Supermarket: Created with high-quality organic olive oil soap, each soap contains authentic and natural aromatherapy essential oils for fragrance from the Provence region of France. And most interestingly, they're hand felted using natural shades of merino wool, which help the soap lasts at least 2 times longer than regular soap while also exfoliating your hands! The exfoliating merino wool felt will shrink as the soap does, leaving only a tiny felt pouch at the end.
9. Tap Water Bottle, $14 at Reform School: A stylish and responsible alternative to plastic and aluminum bottles. Available in both 8.5 & 17 ounces.

Hooray Hands 2011 Desk Calendar, $16 from Rare Device: This screenprinted calendar contains hand-printed illustrations that show a person making/doing something special with their hands each month. Printed on recycled chipboard (98% post consumer waste) with water based red ink, all packaged in a jewel case that folds back to make a stand!


11. Bobble Water Bottle with Built-In Filter, $10 from Green Depot: A water bottle with a built-in filter. The activated carbon filter removes chemicals and impurities in water that meets or exceeds NSF International Standard 42 for chlorine, taste, and odor reduction. Made from recycled PET plastic bottles and certified free of BPA, phlatates, and PVC.

14. 18. A Guide to Green Housekeeping, by Christina Strutt, $13.82 from Amazon: This lovely guide to natural housekeeping is full of inspiring photographs and helpful advice about cleaning, decorating, restoring furniture, and living a calmer, healthier life.
19. Kikkerland Radio Solar Crank, $25 from Velocity Art and Design: Perfect for camping trips or power outages, this AM/FM radio runs on solar power or manual hand crank.
20. London Fog Tea Towel, $22 from Zakka Nouveau: Handmade in LA, this hand-screenprinted tea towel is printed with 100% soy-based ink.
