#26 - Blake's Calm and Inspiring Den

Name: Blake
Location: Highland Park, CA
Type: 3 bdrm/own

Why I use color:I feel that color should both calm and challenge a person. It should provide a sense of peace while at the same time be able to inspire a person to think and work creatively while in that particular room. This room was once the master bedroom of the house and I've converted it into my Den. It had these beautiful brown, built-in wood bookcases, which I felt a deep green could only add to. I painted the mantle white to increase the contrast between the elements... the wood, the brick, the wall. The thing I like the most about my house is that there is one spot when you look straight ahead, you can see three different rooms and three different colors at once.

2 Good color tips:

1. I'm a big fan of color on color. I use wall art that is of a similar shade to accent both the art and the color of the wall it is hung on.

2. I think the name of the color should bring you just as much enjoyment as the color itself. I painted my bedroom Taliesin Blue because it invoked an image of Frank Lloyd Wright for me. This den color green is Italian Basil. My hallway is Golden Retriever. My office is Friar.

2 Good color resources:

1. Old Magazines. It's great to track the popularity of colors over the past few decades. Especially in advertisements.

2. Flea Markets. It's really easy just to browse and see such a wide variety of home furnishing colors at a flea market.
