Type: 1 bedroom apartment/rental

Why I use color: We didn't have much furniture when we first moved in, so we were looking for a way to make our sparse apartment feel like our own while we work on adding furnishings. Color is a relatively easy and cheap way to brighten or enlarge a room or add character and life to an otherwise drab or empty space. After using neutral colors for so long, we wanted to try something different and bold but we didn't want to go overboard, so we painted only an accent wall in each room. Adding color instantly gives a room a dramatic new look and makes it more individualized. There's no better way to make an empty white and beige apartment feel like home.

2 Good color tips:

1. Painting even one wall is an easy way to change the whole look of a room. Look at swatches and visualize your room in the color you're selecting. Or start with accents and accessories (pillows, vases, candles) to add color and determine what color you'd be comfortable with. Rest assured you can always change your mind and paint over the walls.

2. Don't clutter a room with too many colors. Contrasting colors or using shades within a color family can unite a room. Add different textures to add interest.

2 Good color resources:

1. Furniture magazines and store windows show products in flattering or inspiring settings

2. Restaurants, hotels, museums
